    Wink Choosing a trainer

So I am SOMEWHAT new to the sport of boxing. The gym I work out at has several (around 5) trainers. The older guy that's been training me is pretty good but I have a concern and was curious if I could get some feedback from some of you that have been around in the sport for a while.

My trainer was corner man for another fighter that he trains last night (1/31/09). The guy who fought got TKO'd in the first round. Now I have seen this guy train and he seemed to be a very good fighter (good defense, very technical). My question is how much should I be concerned that I am not getting good enough training? I know there are a lot of extraneous variables concerning last night (i.e. the other fighter, the guy who lost, preperation). I just am worried that I am going to step in the ring and not be prepared well enough. Should I be using the older guy or go with someone younger?

Any suggestions are welcome. I think you all get the gist of what I am asking here.

I thought the same thing to be honest. I do like his style, however, he isn't really an "in your face" kinda guy. I am pretty self-motivated but it would help if he were in my ear sometimes.

I mean I kinda anticipated people's responses on here and what they would be like but I wanted to get a general concensus anyways. thank you for your reply.

Ypou have the luxury of choosing a trainer?

    Good for you mate.

The way I see it you train with as many different people and as many different coaches as you can. Nobody knows everything, everbody knows something. You extract each persons contribution and add it to your arsenal.

Observation gives experience not necessarily age

Who are you comfortable with? Who do you trust? Who talks sense?

I agree with Donny, learn from who ever you can, you'll also learn what you don't like and how you don't like to train. Some people respond by getting yelled at others need calm. I think a good trainer is a good reader of people and will pick up on how to get the best from you.

I think there's a lot in this post.

Individuals react differently to different coaching styles. Different coaches may produce very different results purely because of their temperment.

I think to develop in boxing, the fighter must take the onus of learning on themselves. Don't wait to be taught, seek knowledge and experience.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Everyone has had a lot of good things to say. I do really appreciate the comment left about how trainers should be able to read people. I think that is really important. This is all really a lot to think about . Thanks again!!

The thing is,you can train a guy,all you want. He can look like an absolute monster in the gym. He can do everything right in the gym. What else can you really do at that point? The gym and the ring are very different animals,so just because a fighter goes down in a fight, doesnt mean he was improperly prepared,it might just be he didnt have it that night. Happens all the time.
Unlike team sports, you cant have a good game even if the rest of the team sucks, and only one guy is going to walk out of there a winner.
