    Default Official FNF thread 5/22/09

    Alright I'll get this started.

Tonight's main event is between Richard "Chest Hair Cross" Gutierrez and Antwone "The Truth" Smith. Gutierrez always tries to press and make fights. Gutierrez fought to a draw in his last bout trying to get going again after his devasting loss to Alfredo Angulo. Gutierrez a FNF mainstay, fought a bout with many swing rounds. Smith whose also had multiple showings on FNF is coming off a bout that could have gone either way. Even though he scored a kd against then-undefeater "Demonio" Gonzalez, he was rocked on numerous occassions.

The undercard features Cubans Erislandy Lara (5-0 3KOs) and Guillermo Rigondeaux (pro debut). Lara's opponent has made a name for himself as someone who likes to punch below the beltline. Rigondeaux is facing an unknown from AR, certainly in there to get chin checked.

The unfortunate thing is that Softball is on before the fights, which will likely run over and take priority over FNF.

I assume you were watching TSN like I was. The fuckers cut the Rigondeaux fight out of their broadcast. Fightnews has a very brief recap of the fight, I didn't see any of it aside from the highlights they showed at the end of FNF.

How do you not show that?

Anyways, not much to see. Or at least not much new to see. I think one thing you take away from it is that you can see he looks naturally to counter, doesn't jab a whole lot and when he was on the attack he led almost everytime with the left hand. That's no surprise in the amateurs he always mixed it up.

He's an absolutely amazing fighter who's going to do very well for himself. I'm a big fan of southpaws (and there's a lot to choose from these days) and I'm a sucker for a good right hook but a lot of southpaws don't utilize them. His is a pearl and seeing it in a pro ring just gives you an appreciation for it even if he doesn't use it a lot. He kept trying to bait Noriega forward a couple steps by stepping back and then looked to counter with the right hook. Noriega didn't really come in with of reckless abandon though after getting floored 20 seconds into the fight.

Mostly it was all the left hand, his most impressive work going to the body, driving his long left uppercut right into the pit of his opponents stomach. It was good to watch. He hasn't fought in a while given his ban in Cuba since like 07 I believe and that might have showed a tiny bit. He overreached a couple times early and one time he leaped in and their feet got tangled a bit but he's good. He'll fare far better then Gamboa for sure and it won't be long before he makes his run at a title. I just hope he moves up faster then guys like Gamboa and Solis because there is no reason to wait around for him. I really never thought we would see him fight again, very cool.

Sweet I hope to see him fight again, its amazing for all their skills that the cubans seem to not have great structure physically. They are naturally strong, but they are hardly ever sitting in their stance. Even Rigondeaux who is sits on his cross as well as anyone I have ever seen, can get caught out of position doing acrobatic movements like Gamboa has in almost every knockdown against him.

I just saw it, he needs to settle down a bit, too many loaded up wild left hands

Its hard to know what to take from that. The other guy was shit scared and pretty bad. And Rigondeaux is really at his best when the other guy is willing.
