yeah i'm note sure either... Nothing against him, but I didn't realise just being president of a country not nuking the whole planet makes you a peace prize winner... Compared to bush though he's halfway there..

Hate to say it but I think any president not named bush would have won the Nobel piece price, because bush was so hated by most.

Its messed up because the nominations for this had to be in 11 days after he took office what did he do in 11 days that made him eligible for this? If someone knows please explain this to me.

    That is ludicrous.....

I think Obama is probably a decent guy, but he has done nothing to merit the Nobel prize. In fact, his policy thus far in terms of Israel/Palestine has been weak and he is still at war in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

I commend him on closing Guantanamo Bay, but that should never have existed in the first place.

    A head scratching choice tbh.

I laughed, just at how mad this will make Republicans makes it all worth it.

Why he got it is simple, he's not George Bush.

He's done some good things though. Politically he couldn't have pulled out of Afghanistan so soon and Israel is still popular among a large section of America, its a risky thing to go too far there in your first term. People disappointed by him are a bit more idealistic than me, he's a politician, he's not gonna show a reckless disregard for his political future, they just don't do that.

That's not to say I think he deserves it But who cares, apparently its to encourage the general path of his policies, nuclear anti-proliferation stuff, more middle east engagement and diplomacy, etc.

Not even going to bother reading the rest of the thread but 'what has he done' indeed! Utter fucking madness.

I'm not judging/dismissing/ or dissing Obama.

But I thought the nobel prize was supposed to go to someone who did something. like something that is physical in nature, or has literal real-world implications

    Maybe I'm missing something.

Shit I have hope in somethings'. give me the prize.

And I wouldn't waste the prize money on charity either

I think you're confusing the Peace prize with the other categories, for example the Nobel Prize for Chemistry etc. I think there are five prizes in all, the peace prize being the most vague.

Obama's win isn't really that unusual considering many of the previous winners, many politicians and a couple Presidents have won it before.

Generally the award doesn't mean a whole lot, although of course its hugely publicised and politically powerful.

Obama's international policies especially and attitudes towards Europe are very much in line with the President of the Norweigen Committee (those who decide the awards) who is also the President of some international socialist party crap. He obviously sees Obama as a political ally.

In Norway itself many of the political leaders have demanded his resignation but in reality Obama's win is no worse than Kissinger's and a host of others.

The stimulus money helps keep overall US spending from decreasing to the point where it begins to form an economic death spiral, lower spending leading to job losses leading to lower spending type thing. It helps prevent the kind od deflationary death spiral the US economy went into in the 1930s after the 1920s period of easy money, house price boom, no economic regulation. It may be that it isn't enough and you need more stimulus. I think the blame here should go to the jackass that caused the meltdown rather than the poor fucker left to deal with it.

OK so let's get this straight Kirkland, the Stimulus was supposed to help really quick, it was supposed to make jobs RIGHT NOW.....then why have we not spent all that money yet? Why are we saving money (so to speak) only to spend it later on......and more importantly why are we still losing jobs I thought the recession was over? I thought Obama fixed everything?

It's difficult to spend all the money they allocated effectively in such a short space of time. It's actually more effective in terms of monetary flows and velocity to spread it out over a couple of years. We're still losing jobs because that's what happens when you have a recession. Technically we're probaly out of recession round about now, and if this recession is that same as the last two then unemployment will continue to go up for another 18 months before it starts to stabilise.

But we need to spend money to avert a death-spiral situation because this recession has been so devastating, even compared to previous recessions. Without the stimulus and the Fed flooding the financial system with liquidity we'd be full steam ahead into another Depression. Here's a handy chart that explains things quite well :

The dotted red line is our current situation based on the very latest numbers, the dotted red data being maybe two weeks old now. You can see that with the last few recessions, as offshoring and outsourcing of jobs/cheap Asian labour have gradually supplanted large chunks of what used to be US jobs, it's taken longer and longer for employment to return to pre-recession levels. Even if this was a run-of-the-mill recession we'd be looking at another 12-18 months minimum from now before unemployment stopped rising. But you can see how severe this recession is. It could easily take years for things to get back to 2007-level employment even if management of the recovery and the financial system goes as well as can be expected.
