Default Al Bernstein On Boxing: Mayweather-Williams Has A Nice Ring To It

Since negotiations fell through for a fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Manny Pacquiao has moved on to find another fight—and a good one. He will follow up his win over Miguel Cotto with a match against one of the six best welterweights in the world—Joshua Clottey. Now it’s Floyd Mayweather’s turn to choose an opponent.

With Floyd, Manny and Clottey accounted for, the rest of the top six (in my opinion) are Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Paul Williams. Since he fights at other bigger weights some might think it’s a stretch to even list Williams as a welterweight, but he has held that title and says he can easily get down to 147. And, he has made a public statement that he is more than interested in fighting Mayweather on March 13 or another date.

Given all that information, I suggest to you that the sport of boxing would be well served if we had the Berto-Mosley fight on Jan,. 30, the Pacquiao-Clottey fight on March 13, and then the Mayweather-Williams figh... Full Boxing Article here...

I agree now that Pac/Clottey is signed, that if Mayweather/Williams happened it would take a bit of the bad taste away but Floyd wont fight Williams, he wont. Williams is way too dangerous for Floyd mentally, even though i think Floyd would win.

No way maywetaher steps in with Paul Williams...nor Cotto or Margarito either: that ain't maywetaher's MO.

Shane's 38 years old now, so in another year or two, maybe maywetaher will decide it's finally time to step in with Shane.
He'll never fight Berto nor Clottey nor Cory Spinks. He'll NEVER fight a guy like Sergio Da Sex Martinez.

No, I expect maywetaher to decide to dance around with Hands of Marshmallow Malignaggi or possibly 37 year old Nate Campbell who floid'll tell to come up in weight.

floid wants a little guy with no power and no threat to come up to Welterweight.

Ivan Calderon made a crack about that.
Iron Boy is 5 feet tall and 107 lbs.

The Pacquiao fight will still happen, too much money at stake for it not to happen; it'll just be in the Fall is all.

I'm no big PBF fan myself and it is warranted to criticize him for not fighting the elite at welterweight. But people are trying too much to hate on him that they go too far and sound completely ignorant. PBF has only fought a small guy once in his career and that was after a 2 year layoff and the fight netted him $10+ million. In fact, in many of PBF fights he has been the significantly smaller guy for example against Corrales, both Castillo fights, Baldomir, De la Hoya. Calderon sounds silly and ignorant for stating that. Floyd does something once and he is all of a sudden accustomed to doing that. Clottey fights a war ridden lightweight Corrales who obviously was shot and no one says a thing. Criticize Floyd for not fighting the elite at welterweight but not for being the bigger guy. Its just a silly attempt. And by the way, your boy Calderon is the REAL "hands of marshmallow". You know with his 6 KOs in 34 fights.

    1. Shane Mosely.
    2. Miguel Cotto.
    3. Antonio Margarito.
    4. Manny Pacquiao.
    5. Paul Williams.
    6. Andre Berto.
    7. Joshua Clottey.
    8. Cory Spinks.
    9. The late Vernon Forrest.
    10. Kostya Tszyu.
    11. Joel Casamayor.
    12. Paul Spadafora.
    13. Stevie Johnston.

When Floyd was 130 lbs champ, Prince Naseem Hamed was 126 lbs champ.
    14. Prince Naseem Hamed
    15. Marco Antonio Barrera.
    16. Erik Morales.

These elite fighters were all dukin' it out during the past 9 years; isn't it just a little bit strange that Floyd Mayweather hasn't fought ANY of them ?

Don't forget fellas like Kermit Cintron, Vivian Harris, Acelino Freitas, and Juan Lazcano either.

After 2001 and the magnificent fight with the late Diego Corrales at 130 lbs, floid stopped being a warrior.

Whilst I am not a fan of Floyd, he can not fight everyone and he fought less often the higher the weight.
