I think he had an eye injury, not 100% sure on that, but he took his time getting back in the ring.

detached retina against Hearns the first time out forced him to retire, only to come back out for one night only, then retire again, then he came back and beat Hagler and did his run at the other two titles until finally fighting Hearns again

SRL also waited until Hearns was vulnerable and thought he would knock him out easily, he was wrong and got a beating. Hearns was robbed.
