Thumbs down Looks like our very own Darren Barker could be facing Martinez on October 1st

    Wow, just wow.

Unlike others on here, I am not biased when it comes to my nation's boxers.

Barker is European level AT BEST.

He gets destroyed by Martinez within two rounds.

Rubio should be given a shot at Martinez. Hell, I'd rather see Manfredo in there than Barker.

Darren is obviously on a suicide mission.

I'm going to be one of the few here but I think he can do quite well here... Not that he will win but I think he will go 8 or 9 rounds and maybe the distance. I'd say why not Matchroom! Barker won't get another shot at a top 5 p4p in his career - unless he does very well in this match that is!

your not bias about our boxers all you ever say is

Rhodes, European level at best alverez will destroy him
barker european level at best martinez will destroy him
haye european level at best, klitsko will destroy him
murray, european level at best all the world champs will destoy him

to give a realistic slant on Barker v Martinez, Martinez is the most overrated fighter in the world at the minute, and Barker probably the most underrated in britain

Martinez will be the favourite tho but (due to martinezes overratedness) barker will do a lot better than most will suggest and take him into the later stages of the fight

    a) I have never said Haye is European level. That is just a a plain lie.

    b) Check the recent Rhodes vs Canelo thread. I said Rhodes will make a good account of himself.

    Stop making things up, please.

This will be brutal. Barker will get beaten down in a manner of unspeakable proportions if it happens. You don't struggle with the likes of Domenico Spada & Affif Belghecham & then beat one of best fighters in the world. If he does, this would imo be among the biggest upsets in the history of the sport, certainly by a Brit. The only one that would compare imo is Randy Turpin over Ray Robinson & that's only because of just how brilliant Sugar Ray was.

    Good points Erics44

Martinez is not Ray Robinson. He's not even Bernard Hopkins.

For sure he'll be a heavy favoruite but he's not unbeatable. So far he's gone 1-1 with Paul Williams, looked good in winning a decision against an alcoholic, demoralised, weight drained Kelly Pavlik and beat some little known light middle who was apparently a great fighter last time out.

I say Barker surprises everyone and loses a competitive 12 rounds decision.

This fight is just a stay-busy fight. I don't see what this fight does. Barker doesn't have a belt so this isn't an unification. Does he have a big following in the UK? Who has a bigger following Macklin or Barker? I think Geale made the most sense personally as Sergio's next opponent if Sturm isn't available.

Will someone drop some knowledge on me? Is the money that much better if you are fighting on HBO stateside than if you are fighting in Germany against Sturm or in Australia against Geale or in the UK against Barker?

I dont think so. Purse is better fighting in Europe but it comes with a price like having to worry about robberies/jet lag/ hometown disadvantage etc...

But HBO is the world stage so fighters get better exposure and they dont have to worry about hometown cooking as much..

I dont mind a Barker fight. Id rather watch him than Chavez Jr.. Barker aint so bad.

I think this fight isn't horrible either, but it is just a stay busy fight. Is it better than Manfredo? Yes, but not by a ton. If I were Sergio, I'd go on the international circuit if I can't get a ppv fight in the US.
