    Thumbs up Thursday Boxing trivia

#1. Sonny Liston won the World Heavyweight title from Floyd Patterson in Sept. 1962. How long did Liston reign as HW Champion, and how many successful title defenses did he have?

#2. Who was the 1st man to win the Heavyweight Crown twice? (amazing when think how long it took to first happen)

Good luck, no fair looking it up.

Not entirely sure on these, but I'll have a guess anyway without looking at anyone else's answers.

Liston successfully defended the title once (Patterson rematch) and lost it in 1964 (?) to Cassius Clay.

And was the first man to win the title twice Patterson?

Good job, Liston won the HW title from Patterson on Sepember 25th 1962, successfully defended it once against Patterson on July 1963, and then lost it to Clay/Ali, February 25th 1964. So Liston was only a HW champion for about 17 months.

Amazingly, Patterson was the very first HW Champion to win the title twice, but not until 1960. After losing the HW title to Ingemar Johansson by a 3rd round TKO in June 1959, Patterson regained the HW crown a year later in June 1960, by flattening (literally) Johansson in the 5th round.

1 successful defense for Liston, against Patterson. At one point, he'd fought the fewest championship rounds of any heavyweight champion...may still be true. 3 of his 4 title fights ended in the first round.

Patterson also figures in the other question...regained the title against Johannsson, and was the first to do so.

    2) What was Joe Louis's middle name?

    3) What was Sugar Ray Robinson's real name?

This is an interesting stat, Liston fought a whopping grand total of 9 championship rounds.

    1. He lost to Ali in 64 so I'm saying 2 years and 1 successful defense in the patterson rematch
