Default Does Lucas Matthysse have ANY weaknesses?

How do you gameplan for this guy? He's got sick power in both hands. He's fearless. He's got a solid chin. He's got underrated boxing skills. He just took out Lamont Petersen like he was just taking out the trash on a Saturday night. And not dissing Petersen, either. Lamont is a solid professional who's been in there with the best. But that was downright scary.

So how do you gameplan for this guy?

Petersen sort of tried to do that in the 1st round. But couldn't keep Matthysse off of him. I think the tall jabber would have to mix in a few good power shots to make Lucas respect him a little bit. Otherwise, it's a matter of time.

In light of the recent events in boxing... I'd say the list of possible future opponents for Mayweather has suffered a few "tweaks." I don't know whether Matthysse has any plans to move up to 147. But if he does, I think that would make for a super-fight with Floyd. And seeing as to how Floyd apparently has no interest in fighting Canelo at 154, and Canelo apparently can't (or won't) make 147... that fight seems to be drifting off into the sunset.

But Mayweather-Matthysse..... that would be an awesome fight.

He can be outboxed obviously. You've just got to stay away from that power for twelve rounds and manage to take whatever he does land. Judah and Alexander managed it.

    Prospective Floyd opponent?

I think many agree those were dodgy decisions, also after those two fights his come out much more agressive from the gate, but yeah let's not get ahead of ourselves floyd outboxes him, but he's one of the few I think would manage it.

Thought he took both those fights, also hes not a guy waiting around now brought in as an 'opponent'. Hes learned himself and the fact that his power is a constant, early on, and not just a last resort. He can hurt you with just clipping shots and that can be more dangerous than a guy aiming for the perfect shot. First things first and thats Garcia. I like Matthysse around the 8th by tko.

I agre with all of this. As far as the thread title goes, move him up to Floyd level and he's only going to have a fleeting chance to win. But the fact that Mosley rocked Shane means that could be a sellable fight, especially if Matthysse splats Garcia and learns a few words of English.

Agreed, I think both he and Danny can fight Lucas up close. Either would and will be great fights. It might be interesting to see him fight Rios as well.

I would not be wanting to fight Matthysse up close.

I think people are getting a little carried away. Has he even fought a pure puncher? The answer is no but listening to Al and the crew you would think he was Chuvalo. He can be out boxed as an over the hill Judah showed and Devon. He caught up to Lamont tonight but seriously I'm not sure how Al can claim he's the best Jr welt in the division. Its like saying Valero was the best lightweight prior to his death because he had a 100% ko ratio. I'm not convinced he's this unstoppable force. Don't get me wrong that was impressive. I hope the Garcia fight gets made and I'd love to see him in with a guy like Rios.

LOL... I know it's easy to get carried away after seeing a performance like that, but it's not like the guy came out of nowhere. His power was being touted before he stepped into the ring, and he didn't disappoint. Matter of fact, he shocked everyone by how easily he dispatched Lamont. You ask has he ever faced a pure puncher. Who is out there right now who would present that type of danger to Matthysse? Garcia and Rios are hard punchers, but not necessarily the "lights out" punching threats that Lucas seems to be. Split decision, controversial losses to Judah and Alexander (in which they were both dropped) is hardly a damning thing to have on your resume, particularly considering that these may have been points on Lucas' learning curve. I'll say this... I don't think either Judah or Alexander see the 12th round against Lucas if they were to fight today.

I mean, I know boxing is a sport where one fight can either fill, or empty... a bandwagon faster than you can blink. But it's hard not to get excited about this guy for the time being.

And BTW, I'd love to see Matthysse fight Rios, just so he can rip him a new one.

I hear what you are saying and have followed his career but its just outside of tonight he's never beaten a prime elite fighter and has really never had his chin checked to claim that he has this Cobb like chin. Would have loved to have seen him and Maidana go at it. The Rios fight would be interesting or Alvarado. I could not help but notice Garcia's face. He looked a little shook. GBP should be able to make this fight pretty easy. Something tells me that we will see a problem with the unification for this fight though. But yeah man he lights a fire in the division and tonight he most certainly served notice.
