This is another saying in boxing like "he got exposed" that annoys me. Lennox Lewis recently said that David Haye was only in boxing for the money. Well yes, every single fighter that we know about boxes for the money!

Now, I understand that most fighters have ambition and want to win world titles, but they are all in it for cash.

Example: you'll never see a born millionaire say "I think I'll get punched in the face, and do it for free for a living".

Haye is probably in it for cash, but so what?

Should he just fight and refuse pay?
Should he just ignore the obvious boxing gift. and ability he has and go work for £6 an hour in a call center?
Shouldn't we focus on the greats that got away with it? Ali? Tyson? Holyfield?

I think you took it to literal no one who really gets boxing is against boxers who make hundreds of thousands or millions but when it becomes this guy doesn't love the sport it's only for the paycheck of course people will down talk him. There are people who do local shows for the love of the sport and training is expensive, when a boxer loses that they will be in trouble when they are taken into deep water.

He is only in it for the money though. I'm not saying that as a negative point against him, bottom line is that Haye is an extremely talented fighter who wants to get in and out of the sport taking the most money for the least amount of punishment. He has a business model that sells. Incredibly smart really.

I understand it, Haye wants a lot of money, for little work, who the fuck doesn't? If I could get punched in the face for 1% of what haye makes I would.

£7 million he took to fight Klitschko! 1% of that is £70,000, yes please.

Yeah that's a stupid saying as every prize fight is specifically about money.

To be fair to Lewis though, he was refering to Haye's current position in boxing. Haye is no longer part of the new generation, he's been world champion and since the Wlad loss he's just looking for his best business option.

Too right Ray. He does absolutely nothing. I'm sure you know this because you've seen every one of his fights. I'm also sure you've achieved plenty more than Haye in your life. Maybe one of these days he'll get off his lazy arse, make an opinion about someone else and sign it "Dave". That'll be worth a boatload of money.

I understand the issue with the saying, but there are guys who LOVE boxing that are no good (a good example is Mickey Rourke who left Hollywood to be a boxer) at it and there are guys who are really talented at boxing but don't really enjoy it as a career and only wish to do it because it could springboard them into another career or because it could make them quick cash. David Haye is the PERFECT example...if David Haye loved boxing, respected boxing, and truly wished to do well in the sport he's talented enough to make that happen.....BUT he seems to enjoy running his mouth more and being in front of camera. So I would agree with Lennox Lewis, he enjoys what boxing affords him and he is not in boxing to prove anything about himself or to the fans.
