Default Do you choose your boxing style??

Im a new boxer, training in Toronto...studying boxing and boxing history at the same time...just curious you hear about the different boxing styles, swarmer, boxer, slugger..Do you choose which style you become? Does your trainer choose? Does it just happen naturally? Can you consciously choose, focus and train to become a certain style because you find it appealing?

If im a george foreman frame, can I train to fight like Tyson? Also I hear swarmers tend to have shorter careers than the proper boxers, is this true?

    Thanks

A decent trainer will teach you the basics. Dont try and copy a style, you will see what works for yourself. The aim is to hit and not get hit, not to impersanate a fighter and get caught.

Look at Broner. Trying to copy a style that should make him hard to hit but he was the one who took a beating against Maidana and not Khan

It all depends on your size first. Then it's your mentality. I'm a 6 footer- I won't ever be fighting tall in the HW division- my real division.

I never carried much of a wollop, so I had to do the next best thing- I had to maul my way to points or stoppages.

Basically, my fight plan was to get in close, push the opponents to the ropes, and maul and wear him down with resounding punches- not bone crunching punches, but resounding punches.

    That was me.

You can pick whatever style you want, but that doesn't mean you'll be good with it.

If you have long arms, use distance, if you have short arms maybe get inside.

If you're quick and have a solid chin, go to war.

Unfortunately your natural abilities with probably pick your style for you. But everyone is different.

Your style will come out naturally and be refined by your trainer and you will adapt it against your opponent.

Boxers have it easier than sluggers.

I think subconsciously we pick our own styles. Personality traits and temperment play a big part imo. Aggression and such.

Of course physical traits matter as well. But if a tall slow dude is naturally a pressure type fighter then that's what he his. Maybe he can become efficient at a different style but when he can he will swarm. And when shit hits the fan he will do whats natural to him.

Swarmers definitely have shorter careers for several reasons. For one, a swarmer usually need high aggression and high conditioning levels. These wear down when a fighter hits around 30.

The main reason tho is the wars the have. There style is exciting meaning a war a lot of times. These kind of fights take it out of a fighter. Not even so much physically but mentally.

You fight in the manner you feel most comfortable with and that you find most effective. If you are a Foreman size 6'3 or taller sure you can fight like Tyson, there's no law against it, you could fight like Willie Pep if you like.

    BUT....

Take a look at Mike Tyson's physique, remember what made him a dominant fighter, and you'll see that his style was perfect for his body type. You can say the same about Tommy Hearns and his style (which was totally different of course).

There have been taller fighters who have used the Tyson style to some success: Floyd Patterson 6'0, Buster Mathis 6'3, Buster Mathis Jr. 6'3. The deal with Buster & Buster Jr is that they had relatively short arms which called for them to fight in that compact style. I think if God has blessed you with decent height and a good reach you need to make the best use of it...no use in giving your opponent so many chances to hit you by giving up your height and reach, it's not the smartest play to do that, but in the end you do what feels right to you and what works.

I think pressure fighters age out quickly because they have a style which burns off a LOT of energy, they provide their opponents loads of opportunities to hit them, and you will no doubt eventually run into #1 A guy who knows how to control distance with the jab (see Tyson-Douglas, Ali-Patterson, Tyson-Lewis) and #2 A guy who is a bigger stronger bully than you (Liston-Patterson, Holyfield-Tyson)...but every fighter is different, if you can add a wrinkle to that style and nullify the advantages of those kinds of fighters then you'll go far.

I hope you make it work man, keep us updated!

I'm just into boxing on a recreational and hobby level. But even I noticed that somehow I naturally gravitated to often using counter punching. I don't recall ever making a conscious decision to use that style, but it just felt right for some reason. I'm able to change from that when I think about it but drift right back when I just go with the flow.

So I think that eventually your style comes naturally.

Hm..i watched the tyson-lennox fight i thought lennox used the clinch and his right hand to kept tyson at bay? At the very start you see tyson trying to get on the inside with his usual stuff, but then gets hit with a huge uppetcut, and throughout the rest of the fight i just saw lennox holding his right back, at the ready to throw another one just incase tyson got a little brave. Hmm...have to watch it again to watch lennoxs' jab.

Also which fight are you talking about? ali-patterson 1 or 2??

And if ali was so good at keeping the distance with patterson, what happened in the fight with fraizer?
