I think Mayweather is doing a little damage control by insinuating that it was only a hard fight because he chose to not make it an easy fight and try to be exciting.
Maidana gave him some legit trouble in there.

I seldom watch post- or pre-fight conferences. Is it normal for him to call up all his team to stand behind him?

That was interesting, never watched a post fight conference.
Floyd weighed 148lb and Chino was 165lb.
Floyd complained about the referee allowing a rougher fight and wants a different referee for rematch.
Floyd thought Chino punched low.
Maidana said let me wear the gloves that I wanted which brought a cheer from the crowd.
Floyd said Cotto was tougher and Canelo hit harder.
Floyd said he chose to fight more to entertain the crowd and next time he will box more.
