    Default The Pogues

The Pogues have been one of my favorite bands for a long time.

Since there seems to be a lot of British boxing fans on this board, I was wondering how big they were over there in their heyday? Did anyone here ever see them live?

Is Irish/celtic music big over there, or is there a cultural separation between Ireland and England?

I like them, The sickbed of cuchulainn is a fantastic song.

I'm sure you are aware of a fairytale in new york, that is pretty much all they are known for over here unless you speak to someone who is pretty big on their music.

I don't think the Celtic sound has a massive audience in the UK

don't get me wrong they are a pretty big band but 99% of people will go to a Pogues concert just for fairytale.

As I said I like them but I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to them

Ahhh I see, they are more of a "one hit wonder" over there with Fairy Tale. Good song of course but the whole Fall from grace album is one of my favorites front to back

Fantastic! But McGowan's teeth back then...

Those teeth make it look like his tongue is in jail

I saw them a few times back in the day. I saw them at Newcastle Mayfair which was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. I saw them a few times in London too and they were fantastic. And in Dublin at the height of their fame when half of Ireland's music stars got on stage at some point including the Dubliners. They used to be an amazing live band, no idea what they're like now. But the crowds used to go absolutely mental during the shows. Like the wildest rock concert you've ever been to times two.
