Default Haye splits from McGuigan, still plans to win world title...

    Sky Sports News linky thingy

David Haye and trainer Shane McGuigan split after Tony Bellew defeat

David Haye has called time on his relationship with trainer Shane McGuigan following his upset defeat by Tony Bellew.

The 36-year-old only worked with McGuigan for three fights, but the pair have parted company on good terms after Haye was stopped in the 11th round by Bellew at The O2 in March.

An Achilles injury hampered Haye during the defeat and surgery could mean he does not return to the ring until the end of the year.

A statement from Haye read: "Shane and I have come to the mutual decision that when I am ready to go back into full training camp, we will no longer be working together as boxer and coach.

"We remain good friends and will always metaphorically be in each other's corner, but both parties agreed moving forward we weren't right for each other.

"I remain deepy indebted to Shane for playing a pivotal role in my comeback to date. I will be forever grateful for his hard work and tutelage. I would not be in the position I am now without this.

"I wish Shane, his stable of fighters and everyone at Cyclone Promotions the best of luck in the future - they are set to have an explosive few months."

McGuigan recently steered George Groves to a world title at the fourth attempt, with the Londoner forcing a sixth round stoppage of Fedor Chudinov to claim the WBA 'super' super-middleweight title last Saturday.

Bellew remains open to a rematch with Haye, although he has also expressed an interest in challenging either WBO champion Joseph Parker or WBC title holder Deontay Wilder.

Haye issued a positive bulletin on his condition in the same statement, adding: "I'm pleased to confirm rehabilitation is going well and I will make a complete recovery.

"Whilst I am not quite in a position to be announcing my next opponent, my passion for the sport remains unwavered and desire to regain my heavyweight title is stronger than ever."

Strange to see him split with one of the best young trainers out there. Will Haye go back to Booth?

I wish it was true but he is good at making noise and people start to listen and some start to believe again.

McGuigan is fucking clueless when his fighters are up against it and the his tactics aren't working, Frampton and Haye both received shit advise during the rounds in each of their last fights.

He needs to work on that to become a top trainer.

Haye needs someone to chew his ass and make him train hard if he wishes to ever fulfill what potential he has left. Gotta say Haye has made Stevenson's win over Bellew look better now.

Mcguigan told Haye that he should retire so Haye left him.

if that is true and the injury is healing as haye says it is then that's bad advice

a fit haye that would last 5 rounds would beat bellew, if his heart is still in it, which it seems to be then why not at least aim for that?

Maybe Haye is not physically able to last 12 rounds and Shane saw the signs while he was training him. Shane is only trying to be truthful but Haye must be seeing the money signs.

Well that's clearly not true, because he lasted 5 rounds and didn't beat Bellew. and if , as you say , (and I believe) he had the injury before he went in the ring, He should never have entered the ring. To go in the ring with a clear injury when he's earning the money he was , with all the spectators and PPV customers paying is scandalous! he has in effect conned the public.
when the public pay their money and these guys earn the ridiculous money they earn for a meaningless fight, then they should at least be "match fit".
Still , if that doesn't bother you, carry on shelling out your dough for panto match ups.

What did Shane do for him? The only reason Haye was with him is because the gym is a nice snazzy modern one 5 minutes from Haye's old one. Trainer, that has no affiliation/history with star fighter, gets sack after defeat - all par for the course.

When Haye comes back he can claim Shane should've never threw the towel in and stuff like that to deflect away from how shot he is.

if Haye was fit from the off then the tactics were shocking and mcguigan deserves the sack

IMO he fought 5 rounds knowing the leg would go having done very little, if any, sparring in the build up
