Best of Knockouts of the Year (KOTY)

So apparently Ring Magazine picks a Knockout of the Year since 1989. Was looking at the list and saw some truly ferocious knockouts.

But was browsing social media the other day, and came across of this gem.




A knockout of Mike Quarry by Bob Foster back in 1972.

Man! That was a vicious knockout. Foster was well known for his killer left hook... and he practically took Quarry's head off with that one punch. Quarry went down on his back, totally out.

What other knockouts have been memorable to you, and for what reason(s)?

Too many great KOs to name, but a few that stand out: Hearns/Duran, Pacquiao/Hatton, Mercer/Morrison, Tua/Ruiz, and Martinez/Williams. One from last year that really caught my eye was Angelo Leo stopping Luis Lopez—brutal finish.

Yeah that Angelo Leo knockout of Venado was brutal. I remember watching the fight. Venado's no-defense style finally caught up to him.

The ones you mentioned were brutal as well.

Hearns-Duran you could almost see it coming. Hearns had feasted on tough, rugged, short guys before... and Duran was tailor-made for him.
Pacquiao-Hatton, although nothing personal against Hatton, who was a great fighter... was a bit of a lesson in a way. Hatton and his loyal fans were making a lot of p4p noise during those times... and Manny literally put those arguments to sleep with one punch.
Mercer-Morrison was tough to look at (still is). Referee should've jumped in there about 7-8 punches sooner.
Tua-Ruiz was almost inevitable. Tua at that time had a murderous left hook, and he separated Ruiz from his senses.
Martinez-Williams was a bit of a shock that it happened so suddenly. Sergio wasn't exactly known as a huge puncher, or a one-punch knockout artist.

A random one to add.

Kermit Cintron ended up being kind of a disappointment in the long run. But during his brief rise, he exhibited huge power. I remember seeing this one against Walter Matthysse.

What other knockouts have been memorable to you, and for what reason(s)?

Foster at his rangy explosive best there. Rember seeing that for the first time and thinking Quarry had checked out for good . Understand later that loss and brutal fashion hung on Mike for basically the rest of his career and some dealing with family. Foster was right on top of an absolute tear as champ but that heavy weight bug was always there.

Another one of his best of best. When Dick Tiger met the claymore mine that was the left hook!

My mind is running over 101 fav ko's now . For some reason one of the 'newer' favs was this peach from Bailey. Bailey had a knack for an instant eraser once in a while. Always like short sneak uppercuts as a punch.

Randall Bailey was always a knockout threat, and still a very dangerous opponent when Miguel Cotto knocked him out back in 2004. Not part of the thread topic, but this is one of the very underrated (and not frequently mentioned) aspects of Cotto's career. He fought and beat Bailey in his 22nd professional fight. Prior to that he had fought and beaten more than handful of very credible and tough opposition. I can't help but contrast that against the cushy, bloated records of other up-and-coming stars... some of whom can reach 30 or 40 fights before fighting anyone with a pulse. When looking at a fighter's final record... aside from focusing merely on the W's and L's... one needs to look at career progression and development. Of the fighters I've followed, Cotto's record stands alongside anybody's in the final analysis.

Anyway... back to the best of the Knockouts.

Mike McCallum never scored another one punch knockout like this in his whole career but this was a good time to do it.

Awesome KO. Many of the highlight reel KO's in boxing have come from left hooks. Chin exposed... hook coming in from the side... connecting on the point of the chin and twisting that head quick enough to temporarily short-circuit the brain.
Vicious, but classic stuff.
