Whereas Cotto is slower and will be easy for Mayweather to counter.

I don't see Cotto having anything to trouble Mayweather with whereas Pac does. So I think Pac is the more competitive fight for Mayweather.
    Excellent summary. I agree.

Cotto maybe the more clever, more cerebral boxer than Pacquaio, but he is slower and more shop worn. As well as an orthodox fighter and less explosive.
Yeah I agree with all of that as well. Cotto's best chance may be to try and make Floyd lead but being much slower he wouldn't have the chances to counter and doesn't generate enough power off the backfoot imo. If Cotto came forward trying to dig the body etc he would get counter punched to death. Manny would at least have some oppourtunities to sneak big shots in but would likely also just get smacked around off balance for as long as it lasted. I really think Floyd has a stranglehold on the sport as far as talent goes these days, I see Martinez being the best fight for him and that's only due to size.
IF Mayweather can't make a fight with Pacquaio then he should fight Martinez at 160 for the middleweight championship of the world. Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya and Tito Trinidad all stepped up to the plate and faced the two greatest middleweight champions of all time. Why can't Floyd ? He's certainly grown into being a full fledged welterweight. He's def no smaller than Duran was.
Agreed. That's the best fight out there and would really cement his legacy with the top guys. But I doubt it happens because Martinez would be too big a risk. I think floyd would beat him with his defence and boxing IQ but it's about high rewards with least possible risk.

Yes. That, or Canelo, or Amir Khan. I'd buy any of those as a PPV. Unfortunately, they're all unlikely (except possibly Berto) if Cotto stays with Arum.

Cotto/JCC Jr. is a ridiculous proposal from Arum. There would be a 25 lb. weight difference in the ring.

If Floyd had to fight at 154 then Cotto has a better chance of beating him. If Floyd did fight at this weight I would prefer him to fight Martinez, which would be very dangerous for Floyd, hence it will not happen ever.

Cotto has done well for himself as a refined boxer considering he is more built like a fighter. Whilst he is no Felix Trinidad, Cotto has extended his career by developing his boxing skills further. I do not think he could beat Pacquia or Floyd he would give them a good fight at 154lb.

After seeing Pacquiao vs JMM III I would think with a decent trainer in his corner they could come up with a plan to beat Manny. Hell Manny Steward said as much when he took over in Cotto's corner.

Is it a forgone conclusion he beats either Pac or PBF? No, but I think whoever he fights will get tested because Cotto has plenty of heart and some good weapons at his disposal.

I hate hearing this - I know I will probably be crucified for saying this as he's a Puerto Rican legend and hero but I think Cotto is a much better "boxer" than Trinidad was and has perhaps an equally good resume.
Trinidad got owned whenever he came up against anyone who had a half decent boxing ability. Oscar De La Hoya schooled him, Winky Wright schooled him and, of course, Hopkins schooled him. Heck, even a fresh faced Vargas came close to upsetting him but as usual ran out of gas later on.
I don't think Cotto get's schooled by any of those guys at any point in his career. Not saying he wins, but at the very worst is competitive.
    Cotto deserves more respect imo
Tito had an explosive style and tremendous heart but Cotto is up there.

You are wrong Tito would decapitate Cotto if they fought at Welterweight.

Yup have to go against Althugz on this. I think all three of those guys would've beaten Cotto by just as wide a margin as they did Tito as well. I don't see how Cotto could be remotely competitive with Hopkins or Winky at 160 pounds at any point, although of course Tito was naturally a bigger man. Also feel that Vargas would've been way to strong for him and come out with a stoppage win if it had been Cotto in there and not Trinidad, although he would've gotten hit in the nuts as soon as he hurt him in that one as well.

but ofcourse Tito was a big welter just as big as Cheatony Diablo as a welter, but I do agree Miguel is more well rounded.

It's easy to remember the last thing we've seen. I give either guy as much chance to beat floyd. But wouldn't pick either of them.

You're right about this and actually I read on another thread a good point someone brought out...We figure Cotto had made adjustments and improved because he beat the guy that beat him but if Margarito really did cheat the first fight and he's a bum/journeyman then Cotto's victory didnt really mean anything.

I beg to differ - prime for prime I think that fight goes similarly to Cotto Mosley. Cotto too smart for Tito and boxes his ears off all night imo.
and p4pking, I was talking more from a p4p view..i know Cotto wouldn't stand a chance against Hopkins or Winky at 160..but at 154 its nowhere near as lopsided as Winky vs Tito..Hopkins I think beats both guys either way. Anyway I didn't think anyone would agree just giving Cotto his props because people forget he was a beast in his prime.

But Cotto Mayweather..I don't think it's competetive at this stage. But who is competitive at this stage against Mayweather? Martinez at 160..thats about it.

Tito was one of the best welterweights ever. His only losses came against 3 future HOF'ers. But then.... that's my totally unbiased opinion.

Question Re: Cotto VS Mayweather...more competitve than Pac VS Mayweather

Lol thats cool man. He is definitely one of the greats..my point was more the disrespect to Cotto. I don't think he's at all far behind Tito in skills and accomplishments. Both fighters only lost to the best..well Marg sucks but he cheated so we can strike that off . I think Puerto Ricans can be just as proud of Cotto

I think you're absolutely correct. People here have been slower to warm to Cotto than they did to Tito, but that was probably due as much to their demeanors as to anything they did in the ring. Tito was always smiling... always shaking hands and signing autographs. He loved the limelight and reveled in it. Cotto can sometimes seem more aloof, and some people unjustly hold that against him. Not me, though. You gotta look at the positives in people. For instance, I'm very proud that Cotto has made such a huge effort to learn English, so he can speak to the media himself, rather than through an interpreter. Huge kudos for that. Also, his composure, especially against someone who he literally hates, like Margarito...... is something to be proud of also. I doubt I would be as classy or reserved. So yeah.... good points you've made.
