    Default Struggling with skipping

    Hi,

This may sound very silly to most of you. Today I bought a speed rope. I have just tried skipping and I am failing miserabely. Firstly I cannot stop myself from skipping wrong. Instead of keeping both of my feet together and making them jump at the same time, I am firstly rising my left leg first and then my right leg. When I skip, I am bending my knees. The only way I can explain the way I am doing it is running on the spot. It looks like I am running but I am staying in one place. I cant understand why I cannot keep my feet together and make my legs jumop at the same time. I need some tips as I have never done this before and I am determined to skip properly very soon. Thanks.

I don't know man, I think you should just practise more. You already seem to know what's going wrong. Skipping does not come naturally for most people. When I started I was clumsy as hell. Just practise. You will not get good at it all over sudden, but I'm sure you'll see progress pretty soon.

    Some hints:

    - Do not jump too high.
    - Use variation. Run in place, skip with both legs, get the knees up, touch your bottom with your feet, etc. Do not jump in the same style all the time.
    - Play music. Hiphop works great for me.
    - Swing the rope by using your wrist instead of arms, you will be able to keep going much longer.
    - Jump in front of a mirror. Look at yourself getting less clumsy over time. This will motivate you.

unfortunately , skipping comes with practice!
first off, running on the spot is a form of skipping. i do that rather than jump on the spot most of the time. skipping is all about reactions and co-ordination. keep going as you are, untill you feel comfertable.

for the average skipper the idea is to clear the rope as it comes round, but keep your feet as close to the ground as you can. some people choose to "power skip". this is a form of stamina only traning, rather than co-ordination, and involves sprinting on the spot, spinning the rope at a constant maximum speed, and doing double/triple jumps (this is where you jump as high as you can and tuckl your legs in while keeping the rope going, the idea is to spin the rope twice or 3 times for each jump)

I kinda had the same problem you have, I used a normal jump rope so i could get used to it and then I started using a speed rope, just work on it and dont give up, you will get the hang of it

skipping used to be very hard for me too. Now I can vary a little, and sometimes it still goes horrible. Can't seem to get more than 10 jumps in a rom But as they say, practise makes perfect, and yeah, i'm (slowly) getting better at it. And keep in mind, I'm a woman, i should be able to skip but also having trouble with it
