Andre Dirrell is probably more similar to Jones Jr than Martinez and I find him dull to watch too. It isn't a style I warm too very easily.
Dude, he knocked out a guy with his hands behind his back. Jones was a lot of things, but he was a very entertaining fighter (edit: or as entertaining as someone who massively outclassed all of his opponents until the end could be).
I respect Jones Jr, but cannot say I enjoyed his style. I believe a lot of other fighters have been a lot more entertaining. I like different styles, from that of Barrera, Toney, Tyson, and Calzaghe. All very different, but the all reflexes and avoid a punch at all costs style is just a bit boring. It is effective, but I don't regard it as very entertaining. You can nod off at points.
So why didn't you like Roy's style? Was he playing too safe while knocking people out and rarely losing a round?
Purist, what the hell is that avatar all about? Is that a sexy pout? :-)
Its either that or his whatcho talkin bout Willis! face.

It's nothing to be ashamed of that Sergio isn't equal to that because NO ONE is.

Roy was exceptional but his record was laughable! He never fought any of the main men in any division!

He unified the light heavyweight division, so he could not have avoided too many top fighters.

You can see it in the bigger picture. The swagger, confidence, setting traps for guys and whipping in hooks and repositioning them without them even realizing it etc. Sergio is an oddity somewhat like Jones who was not a technically sound 'boxer' at least in the truest definition. Dude was all reflex...instinct and speed. I actually think Martinez is closer to a traditional boxer....and at the risk of being laughed off the board...he has more gears than Roy, he def takes more chances but no he has not accomplished as much. He's at peak at 37 yrs old with late start in sport and bare minimal ama background its a good compliment.

The bigger question is what does that make Chavez. Ruiz or Richard hall Damn I need some serious coffee!

Oh do one Philosopher. You come on this forum talking about how wonderful and amazing Calzaghe was but can pick faults in Roy Jones Jr's CV?? Now THAT is what's laughable.

Calzaghe never fought a single fighter EVER the calibur of James Toney prime or Hopkins prime. You are trolling this thread real hard with that shit.

Gandalf, you're also mad that it's pretty much widely accepted Roy would have made JC his bitch if they fought when it truly mattered. I have no other reason to believe anybody could not like watching an RJJ masterclass in his prime.

Back to the topic at hand, Martinez is nowhere near as invincible as Roy was during his peak. He can be caught occasionally but then again he's hit his peak later. Imagine he hit it at 25? I know he didn't start til he was what, like 20? That in itself is mighty impressive.

Calm down cupcake...u talk like a schoolboy! 'U cum on here....' LOL. It is a boxing debate forum is it not? Calzaghe was amazing and wonderful

PRIME Hopkin's thats a laugh, he was barely top 10 and had only fought 11 fights that were sanctioned for 10 rounds or more! And toney had to make weight about 7 times! Prime hopkins LOL Mercado battered him.....

Its hard to take someone serious who has a man wearing a thong as his avatar! But if u want lets talk 168lb vinny pazienza and overlook, liles, dariusz, eubank etc

Anyone can look invincible fighting CW mcallum and taxi drivers! Nunn, liles, benn, eubank, michalkewski, maske, rochigianni, collins, calzaghe etc were are they?

And dont act like beating toney was some awe inspiring feat....griffin and thadzi did it !! Even bummy terry mcgroom gave him all he could handle! Calzaghe beats toney.

I cant believe this has turned into a jones vs calzaghe thread!
    Okay everyone deep breath...
Lets congratulate martinez on a great fight but he is no way near rjj status.
As i said on previous posts JC is great boxer with excellant stamina but lets not get it twisted..rjj in his prime is like comparing Galvatron to starscream.
Rjj made toney and hopkins look like sparring partners and the body shot he gave virgil hill was like a gunshot.
I know there are die hard calzaghe fans but surely they realise frank, enzo and JC wanted no part of rjj many moons ago.

Lets not forget rjj is a former heavyweight champion of the world.
What middleweight today has the ability to do that?

Roy Jones - Can't be touched - YouTube

I agree with what you've said. And pretty much everyone that says RJJ>JC

But bringing up his win over Ruiz will only open room for them to counter with "he wasn't heavyweight champ he was a titleholder blah blah blah"

Ruiz wasnt the best heavyweight but he was good enough to beat holyfield. Cant knock rjj achievement. Then to keep the fans happy he drops 25lbs of muscle and weight and beats tarver. Genius.

As I said before, you manipulate data to suit your stupid arguments! Mercado beat Hopkins in his first pro fight you complete buffoon..What bearing does that have on his fight with RJJ?

I don't know, where were those fighters that you mentioned? Was Roy truly at fault for not fighting them or did everybody just want to sit happily in their backyards? In which case it would have been their fault because Roy was the top guy.

Calzaghe may or may not have beat Toney but again, as always with Calzaghe it can only be a "he would have.." scenario.

Also the schoolboy thing...? I don't get it - you started mocking my grammar when there was nothing wrong with it. Good one clever clogs. Maybe you just like schoolboys? Keep that shit to yourself.

Finally, only Greenbeanz has the right to use the picture of me in my avatar against me..and it's designer swimwear, jackass, not a thong

I speak the truth that is what irks you! What have i manipulated? You have been given facts!

Mercado beat Hopkins in his first pro fight you complete buffoon..What bearing does that have on his fight with RJJ?
Mercado DREW with hopkins in hopkins 29th pro fight! Are u stupid? (I think u are confusing mercado with cintron mitchell!) The bearing it has is thus: Hopkins at that point in his career was beatable as evidenced by mercado decking him twice a year later and fighting to a draw (I thought mercado had done enough to get the decision!) Also note hopkins was rated around #8 (Not #1) at the time and it was hardly a BEATDOWN was it? Jones just ran for 12 rounds in a close (5 rounds to 7) fight!

I don't know, where were those fighters that you mentioned? Was Roy truly at fault for not fighting them or did everybody just want to sit happily in their backyards? In which case it would have been their fault because Roy was the top guy.
I think u will find that dariusz was linear/ring mag champ at LHW from 97-03.

If he was Welsh like Calzaghe or German like dariusz he would be bashed from the same people who praise him now! De La Hoya IMO was the greatest fighter of the 90's not jones! Plus he got his guts spilt by journeyman johnson and roid freak nobody tarver, Calzaghe was outboxing undefeated lacy and kessler!

Calzaghe may or may not have beat Toney but again, as always with Calzaghe it can only be a "he would have.." scenario.
    Obviously:

    Won't even dignify that....

So much nonsense to address, but that one stood out the most.... too laughable refute... Have you ever seen the film "Stephen King's Cat's Eye" the one where the little TROLL constantly tries to steal Drew Barrymore's breath while she sleeps?
