What is your favorite weight class?

There's always a lot of talk on how bad the heavy weight division is and how boxing needs heavyweights to help the sport. I think for most casual fans this is true as there is always the chance of the stunning one punch knock-out shot. I think that as fans learn the sport more and start seeing different styles they might start actually appreciating some of the lighter weight classes due to the speed and technical aspects that the lighter weight class fighters need to rely on to be successful.

If i was pinned down to only one weight class I would have to say 154lbs. The fighters in this weight class bring speed and knockout power, there is still alot of movement, and its probably where I would land if I was an elite lever boxer.

Great question. I'm an original 8 guy so it took a little while to contemplate. Gun to my head I suppose I would take welter with middle riding at its heels followed by lightweight. I just think its been the most overall exciting division both today and historically. I really like flyweight also but we don't get to see the little guys headlining etc although that has started to change with streaming improvements.

Welters. Just that common middle ground where good fighters move up from jr. welt and between jr middle. 154 is on a bit of a upswing recently. I have never been huge on heavyweights.

Could not agree more with this post. I think the lighter weights get a bad rap but there's been some good scraps in them lower divisions.

Could not agree more with this post. I think the lighter weights get a bad rap but there's been some good scraps in them lower divisions.

The lower weights do have more quality fighters which is why I think they tend to have a shorter career as they age more quickly and their career is accelerated.

In terms of "all time", I'd have to say...

1) Heavyweight
2) Welterweight
3) Middleweight

I know that the guys in lower divisions are much more skilled than the bulky HWs, but to me the biggest attraction is always the HW division, because (at least on paper) the #1 HW is the guy who can whip ANY MAN in the ring. The HW champ SHOULD be the baddest man on the planet.

Right now, my favorite is the Welterweight to Light middleweight area. Just so much talent and such a diverse talent pool. You have established living legends like Pacquaio and Mayweather, you have budding stars like Canelo, solid wild card guys like Berto, Guerrero, ect, and exciting prospects like Keith Thurman. I really enjoy that range of weight right now.

If push came to shove I would reluctantly allow cruiser to stay if the other 8 original divisions could be established once again. I can see the logic & to be fair it has had a bad rap but has been a good division recently.

WBC, IBF & WBO were supposed to be discussing this, a step too far for me. Followed the sport for 30 years but it would be no more boxing in my house if this comes to fruition, I feel that strongly about it. There's already 17 divisions & some are just 3 or 4 pounds between them, they are fucking pointless!

Anything below heavyweight and I'll tell you why:




1. With the no upper weight limit, you can have the 40-50 pound differences like you had for the Fury-Cunningham fight.

2. It lends itself to fat, blubbery, out-of-shape fighters who are just banking on landing a haymaker and strike it rich.

3. Save for a few exceptions, heavyweights are devoid of most boxing skills. Defense, foot movement, ring generalship, variety of punches, good looking flurries...... all that shit goes out the window when you have some of these behemoths fighting.

4. The quality of fighters has been atrocious for the last several years, and counting. There's Wlad..... and then there's a garbage pail of disappointments, has-beens, woefully inactive, oft-injured, and never-will-be's. It's quite sad.

5. It's the one division where 50-year old retirees think they can somehow come back and cash in on one more payday. Just slap on the ol' false teeth and drive me to the gym.

The size disparity in the hev division is much bigger then any other division or several combined.

If there was ever a "Super Heavyweight Division" then we would have just experienced the absolute greatest 3 Super Heavies of all time back to back to back in Lewis, Vitali, & Wladimir...nobody else could compete.

South of light heavies there is a need for skill and that is entertaining. Unfortunately some of the best have been cheated by inept judges. Mayweather, Alvarez, Martinez and quite a few others overshadow the heavier divisions with skill and a large well full of challengers. My favorites however is whoever comes in shape ready to fight and ducking no one and that is south of light heavyweight.

Well in the past there would have been even fewer super heavies. Outside of Riddick Bowe, Primo Carnera, and Buddy Baer, I can't think of many guys that big who had any success.
