It was a unanimous points decision over Patrick Lumumba in 1989 which won him the IBF world title, which he successfully defended later that year against Siza Makathiini.

Jeff Lampkin was the next challenger and McCrory was adjudged the loser by a controversial decision, two judges scoring the bout even but the third giving it to the American by a single point.................
