Pianeta and Leapai sandwiched around a credible opponent.
Is there a record Wlad is approaching at the moment that we're scouring the bottom of the barrel?
Wlad WOULD be fighting Boytsov had he beaten Leapai but he didn't and now people are complaining about Leapai and I'm saying Wlad HAS to fight him because he's the WBO #1.
Are there better guys out there for Wlad to fight? Hell yeah, but he's GOT to fight Leapai to keep his title.
So complain all you like but this is a MANDATORY fight.
As for Pianeta he was decent enough he just was not in Wlad's league.....which describes 99.9% of the heavyweight division.
I understand he isn't going to vacate the belt when he can keep them all and make this an easy mandatory, but to suggest he would be criticized for doing so is way off imo. Lepai would probably lose to everyone else who is ranked in the top 10 by the WBO. Next after him, for instance, are Chisora, Andy Ruiz and Wilder. Let one of those guys beat Lepai for the vacant title and all it does is create a much better fight for Wlad. Besides, what about the other 2 beltsHe could fight Arreola or Pulev, who are both top ranked guys in those alphabets.
Didn't realize Leapai was a mandatory... but fair enough.
Still.... it doesn't excuse Wlad for fighting Pianeta. Pianeta was shit..... everybody had said he was shit..... and he promptly proved everyone right. It was a pre-announced massacre. Yeah..... the rest of the division isn't much better. But Wlad could be making a much better case for his legacy by fighting nothing but the best (or least worse) the division has to offer. Unfortunately we're years away from knowing whether the Wilders and the Furys could conceivably give Wlad a run for his money. But there's other battle-tested guys out there that deserve a shot. (Well..... except Haye of course. He already got his shot and blew it).
Wlad should know that after that poor excuse of a heavyweight fight against Povetkin..... he needs to give his public something to cheer and get excited about. So let's get this mandatory the hell over with and let's look for a real opponent. Just sayin'.
There are bids already for the WBO fight
As for Leapai he beat Boytsov who was ranked fairly high as a heavyweight. what more do you want from the guy? He beat a guy who was in line for a title shot...has Leapai not earned his shot? I mean yeah he SHOULD fight better competition before fighting Wlad but the WBO have made up their minds and there ya go.
Although Leapai was a bum opponent and mandatory I can't help but feel ashamed for Wlad's cherry picking, he could have selected Kubrat Pulev as an opponent instead, whatever he was like he would definitely have been a better opponent than Alex!
Just so long as the next opponent is someone decent ey!
