This is harsh. He was clearly the smaller man v Kov and has no power at the weight. I have no doubt 168 would be a much better weight for him. Saying he had nothing left is just wrong. He comfortably beat Murat, Shumenov and Cloud in his 3 fights previous who are all probably top 20 light heavies. He also beat Pascal who is a top 10 LHW. He just got beat by a better fighter hands down. I dont think age had much to do with the loss and still think a Hopkins of 5 or 10 years ago would have lost to Kov.

Looking at boxrecs top 10 SMW there are plenty who Hopkins would still be trouble for. THe Dirrel brothers, Sturm Stieglitz and Abraham and hed be a nightmare for Chavez Jr.

Its not as if he's going to melt down at age 50 and then go and find smaller and weaker men. Frochs as big as Kovalev. He's not going to fight just anyone either as stated in the article. He's having an internal scrap with his ego just like Roy and we've all seen what has happened there. He's accumulated 26+ years of hubris. Pepp and Moore also shared that same illness and many others that were nowhere near 3 decades in the sport.

He weighed in 173 for the Kov fight. I seriously doubt he cut any weight for the fight. 168 would not be a weight cut that would weaken him. I cant imagine Hopkins walks around more then 180 normally

He came into the fight at 183 or so. It's not an impossible cut, but for a 50 year old who has been at 175 for the last 10 years or so, even those 7lbs extra could be a bad situation for him.

He maintained 160 by being a gym rat and became a natural middle as a result because he was in fighting shape all of the time. Other mids at the time packed a lot of water and although some may have been heavier at fight time they were not really bigger. In his middleweight prime Hop had about a 2% body fat ratio. That was a lifetime ago in this sport.

You are right. It would be a massive mistake for him to try and come down.
