    Jerry Quarry was real hard on two sparring partners at the Main St gym. One was Ken Norton; KO'd him once with a right and once with a hook to the liver.
    The other was Mike Quarry. He would smash him. Jerry fought for awhile with a bad back. He hurt it fighting in a bar when Mike tackled him into a jukebox.

    Promoter > Pete Ashlock

    Gate Receipts .... { $13,794 }

    * 'Irish' Mike Quarry - 35-1-1 {11 KO's} ~ 5' 11" ~ 179 lbs. ~ {Age; 21 years, 10 months}
    vs.
    * Paul 'The Ghost' Kasper - 37-14-1 {22 KO's} ~ 5' 11" ~ 172 lbs. ~ {Age; 28 years, 1 month}
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ The Skinny ~

    Mike Quarry has hooked up with Orlando, Florida Fight Promoter - Pete Ashlock.

    Mike has dropped to the #10 WBA Light-Heavyweight, and needs a win to get back
    on the 'right track'.

    Mike's last win was 9-Months ago, on April 3, 1972.

    Paul Kasper is a 'club-fighting' journeyman from Maine, and fits the bill.

    ~ Mike Quarry Wins In Orlando ~

    Mike wasted little time in the Opening Round, and went after Kasper with a series of
    left-hooks to both the head and body.

    At the {1:45 Mark}, Mike landed '6' good left-hooks in a row, and Kasper went down for
    a '6-Count'.

    Pail Kasper survived Round 1, but in Round 2 he was battered by Quarry. The Maine
    journeyman ate lefts-and-rights to the face, and had his nose bloodied in the process.

    Mike 'staggered' Kasper at the {2:45 Mark}, and after tagging him with another barrage
    Kasper's legs buckled. At the end of the Round, Paul Kasper's eyes were 'glazed'.

    Somehow the Maine journeyman survived Rounds 3 and 4, as Quarry continued to
    pepper him with lefts-and-rights.

    In Round 5, Mike continued on the offensive, and battered Kasper with a volley of
    punches to the both the head-and body. At the mid-way point in the session, Mike
    unloaded with a hard left-hook to the head, and Kasper went down in his own
    Corner.

    Paul Kasper got up at the '7-Count', as he staggered to his feet. The Referee allowed
    the bout to continue, and Mike attacked with a 'blizzard of left-hooks', as Kasper
    reeled into the Ropes.

    Referee - David O'Hanlon then jumped in, and called the bout over at {1:45}, and
    awarded Mike Quarry a TKO 5 win.

    Fight Purses

    ~ California State Light-Heavyweight Championship ~

    * 'Irish' Mike Quarry ~ 36-1-1 {12 KO's} ~ 5' 11" ~ 175 lbs. ~ {Age; 21 years, 10 Months}
    vs.
    * Ray 'Windmill' White ~ 42-12-5 {11 KO's} ~ 6' 4" ~ 173 1/2 lbs. ~ {Age; 34 years, 5 months}
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ The Skinny ~

    Mike Quarry is now back up to the #7 WBA / #7 WBC Light-Heavyweight. 'Young' Mike wants to add
    the California State Championship to his mantle.

    Mike holds the NABF Light-Heavyweight Championship, and that Title will be on the line as well.

    Both Mike Quarry and Ray White 'signed' the Fight Contact on January 2, 1973. This will give them
    both 28-Days to prepare.

    Note: On January 7th, Mike took a flight to Orlando, Florida to take a 'warm-up' bout on Wednesday
    January 10th at the Sportatorium against 'club-fighting' journeyman.

    Mike last fought only '19-Days' ago in Florida.

    Ray 'Windmill' River

    Ray Miller was a 'balding' 34 1/2 year-old Light-Heavyweight from Ventura, California.

    Ray, a Carpenter by trade, is a popular fighter in California. A 'true' fan favorite.

    At 6' 4" and with a 78" Reach, Ray did look like a 'Windmill' fighting, as he was 'all arms'
    flailing.

    The Ventura Light-Heavyweight had been a Professional since December 1958 {14-Years},
    and compiled a record of 42-12-5 with {11 KO's}.

    Ray was a tough-guy despite is frail-and-lanky frame, as he had only been stopped 'once'
    early in his career {4th Pro bout}.

    His unorthodox-style includes a 'Bag-of-Tricks', like leaping up in the air and punching, jumping
    around in the Ring like a Gymnast, and using a 'tricky' behind-the-back punch.

    'The Windmill' was the California State Light-Heavyweight Champion {Won Title on March 2, 1971}
    and had defended his Title '7-Times'.

    And since November 1970 > Ray had only lost '3' of his '20-Bouts', by going 15-3-2.

    Ray 'Windmill' White >

    "Nobody takes me seriously, because I fight in a lost division {Light-Heavyweight}. I have a unique
    fighting style, and take a different approach to this 'gutter grubbing sport'. Yes, I have a bizarre
    style, but it works for me and the fans love my work ethic."

    "I think that I can give Mike a fight. In fact, I think I can beat him. This fight is what I have been
    waiting for. I'm not about to 'muff' it up."

    "If I cannot get to him with my orthodox tactics, I'll switch up and go after him with my
    'Around-the-Tree' punches, or my 'Double-Bubble Uppercut'.

    This thread makes no sense. How can he both need more time to work on his craft and at the same time be in decline from his mini wars and hard sparring. It can not be both.

    Good Assessment >

    If you followed anything about Mike Quarry, you would realize that the 'worst' thing about
    his Boxing, was that he failed to develop a tight defense.

    Too many bouts against 'light-hitting' opponents gave Mike the false sense the he could take a punch.

    And the Gym Wars with 'big-gloves' didn't help either.

    By early-1973 > Jack Quarry shipped his son {Mike} 'East' to Pete Ashlock in Orlando, Florida.

    And it wasn't to improve his defense. It was to get Mike a lot of fights at $4000 to $5000 per pop,
    because he had a 'name'.

    It was too late to change him. As early as 1974 {Age; 23 1/2} Mike already looked shop-worn,
    and had lost his fresh-face good looks.

    ~ Mike Quarry Decisions 'Windmill' White ~

    ~ Mike Quarry Wins ~

    Mike Quarry was in control throughout the early Rounds, and worked his way inside the taller Ray White.
    The World-Rated Light-Heavyweight hammered his 'tall opponent' with left-hooks to the body.

    But during the middle-Rounds, the Ventura-based fighter kept Quarry off-balance by jabbing away with
    long-looping left-hands.

    Quarry, at {5' 11"} and fighting with a {5"} height disadvantage, tried to work his way inside and hammer
    the lanky 'full-time' Carpenter with left-hooks to the body. And several times, Ray White folded over like a
    'Tent' in a heavy wind.

    But though Quarry controlled the first 5-Rounds, he had to take numerous left-hands to the face from his
    taller opponent during the middle-Rounds.

    Quarry's face was very 'puffy' by the middle of Round 9, and the local Anaheim boxer had the look of
    frustration in his face after taking several long right-hand counters to his right-eye.

    In a 'wild' Round 10 > Mike Quarry came in low and hit 'Windmill' with several border-line blows. In retaliation,
    White 'bit' Quarry on his shoulder when they were in close.

    To counter that, Quarry then thumbed White in his right-eye.

    After seeing the 'fouling', Referee - Chuck Hasset moved in and told both fighters >
    "Hey, I'm not going to put up with any more of this Shit."

    But, the Anaheim-based youngster re-grouped and had a 'solid' last 2-Rounds to 'nail down' the Decision over
    the 'unorthodox' Carpenter from Ventura.

    Surprisingly, though Mike Quarry was the local from Anaheim, the 'majority' of the spectators were cheering
    for the 'awkward visitor' Ray White.

    And the local 'Press Corps' sided with the Ventura-visitor, as he had an entertaining-style. As Mike's style
    does not make him a favorite with the fans.

    Scorecards
    * Referee - Chuck Hassett ...... {8-3} > Mike Quarry
    * Judge - Eddie Fiero ............. {7-3} > Mike Quarry
    * Judge - John Thomas .......... {6-4} > Mike Quarry

    * Independent Press-Telegram {7-5} > Mike Quarry

    Promoter .................................. Mickey Davies
    Anaheiim Convention Center ...... Capacity > 9500

    ~ After Bout Comments ~

    Mike Quarry >
    "He's not a fighter. He's an entertainer."

    "He is so tall {6' 4"}, that I couldn't find his chin. I couldn't land anything flush. I got discouraged
    because my jabs weren't hurting him."

    Ray 'Windmill' White >
    "I thought the bout was a 'Draw'. Each time that I wound up, he rushed me and grabbed me.
    I had all the 'fun', and I wasted the last 2-Rounds."

    "Tell Mike to forget about it. He has 'no chance' at getting the Crown. He's not going anywhere.
    He can't hit at all."

    "My Manager was putting in a request to fight Bob Foster next. Now that I'm thinking about it,
    maybe not."

    Ray 'Windmill' White was an honest to goodness character, an original.
    He had a thing for the ladies across the border in Tijuana. He was giving an interview on live TV one evening and talking about how much he liked Mexico, anyway Ray says, "The ladies in Tijuana love me, they call me The Fountain down there."

    ~ Mike Quarry ~ 'Back On The Road And Searching For Success'

    22 year-old Light-Heavyweight - Mike Quarry is now in the hands of New York
    Fight Manager and Trainer - Gil Clancy.

    The young Light-Heavyweight from Anaheim, California > left the West-Coast for
    Florida in March of this year. Mike was promoted by Pete Ashlock of Orlando.

    But after only '1-Bout' {April 4th}, Mike made a move North, to New York City.

    Now, the talented but still searching boxer will be under the guidance of Gil Clancy.

    Gil Clancy >
    "Mike has been in 'a fog' since getting Knocked Out by Bob Foster last year {June 27, 1972}."

    "If he follows my instructions, I'll be able to rebuild him and get him back into contention
    within a year."

    "The kid is 'head-strong', and he wanted me to get him a rematch with Bob Foster for this
    year {July 1973}. I told him that he was 'out-of-his-mind'. I told him that he's still not in
    the type of condition {mentally} to Challenge Bob Foster."

    "If you want to beat Bob Foster, you have to have a 'fight plan', proper preparation and
    most importantly, a sound mind. Otherwise, that guy will take your head off. The last thing
    I want, is for Mike to get 'plastered' again."

    ~ The Skinny ~

    This will be Mike Quarry's {1st-Bout} under the guidance of Gil Clancy. Mike had last fought
    {19-Days} earlier in Orlando, Florida - where he went '10' brisk Rounds.

    Mike is now ranked as the #3 WBA Light-Heavyweight.

    His opponent, Hal 'TNT' Carroll is a gritty puncher, with a low-attacking style. Hal is from upstate
    {Syracuse} New York and the 9-Year Professional is a capable fighter.

    Surprisingly, as a New York resident, this will be Hal Carroll's {1st Bout} in New York City. Hal
    has been 'idle' for the past 5-Months, and last fought in November 1972.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ~ Mike Quarry - Hal Carroll 'Draw' ~

    ~ Carroll Earns Draw With Quarry ~

    World-Rated - Mike Quarry and Syracuse veteran Hal 'TNT' Carroll battled to a 10-Round Draw
    tonight.

    Quarry, who entered the Ring as the 'Favorite' at {5-2} found himself up against a 'strong-and-cagey'
    veteran in 32 year-old Hal Carroll.

    The 'fast-handed' Quarry got off to good start, by landing repeated 'snappy' left-hooks to Carroll's head
    during the first 3-Rounds.

    But soon, Quarry found himself getting 'out-muscled' by the veteran, and backed-up after getting rocked
    by solid left-hooks to the head.

    When the fighters 'traded-blows', it was Carroll's punches which carried more force. The Syracuse veteran
    fought out of a 'low-crouch', and only had the top of his exposed for Quarry to target. After Quarry would
    fire, Carroll would come up out of the crouch and slam in a hard 'left-hook' and straight 'right-hand' into
    Quarry's head, and then go back down into a crouch while covering up.

    This 'bob-and-weave' tactic of Hal Carroll's was very effective during the middle-Rounds.

    In a heated Round 7, both fighters got into a 'wild' toe-to-toe slugfest. Then suddenly Quarry let go with
    a hard punch that was 6" below Hal Carroll's belt-line. The punch went into Hal's groin area. Immediately
    Hal 'doubled-over' and turned away. Quarry somewhat bewildered, failed to follow-up.

    Referee - Harold Valan called a 'Time-Out', to let Hal Carroll walk off the low-blow. The Referee also took the
    Round away from Mike Quarry.

    When the action resumed, Quarry tried to box from the outside, but he was unable to use his quick-footwork,
    as Hal Carroll was accurate with his 'long-range' punches.

    Hal Carroll went flat-footed over the last 3-Rounds {8, 9 and 10}, and took the fight to Mike, preventing
    Mike for using his usually 'quick-footwork' and forcing him to fight in close."

    Scorecards
    * Referee - Harold Valan ........ 5-5 > {'Even'}
    * Judge Harold Lederman ..... 5-4 > {Hal Carroll}
    * Judge - Bill Recht ............... 8-1 > {Mike Quarry}

    * Associated Press ................ 6-4 > {Hal Carroll}

    "I thought I won, as so did a lot of other people. He was tough, but I landed more punches
    on him."

    "I've had a bad chest infection {cold} for 4-Days. It did bother my breathing, especially
    in the later Rounds."

    "I felt strong in there, but I didn't have a lot of snap on my punches."

    Hal Carroll >
    "I landed all the harder punches. I really did land a lot of good punches on Mike tonight.
    I backed him up all night."

    "I pressed him and stayed low. You know I'm an 'Iron Worker' by trade, and I was a lot
    stronger in the Ring then he was. I carried the fight in every Round."

    "He hit me low {in the groin} in Round 7, and I saw Stars. But I wasn't going to retaliate,
    as I am a Religious Man. I didn't think the 'low-punch' was intentional, but it came in real
    low. The Referee took the Round away from Mike anyway, and that was punishment enough."
