Default Is the Cotto vs Canelo fight overrated?

I think it's a solid fight and its a pickem type of fight IMO so I'm sure it will be exciting. I just don't think it's a super high quality fight. Cotto was once really good but has gone downhill. Yes, he has rejuvenated his career a bit but he still isn't in his prime and at a higher weight than normal.

Canelo has never impressed me that much. He is a solid fighter but has never gotten over that edge to make him great. So essentially its two good fighters which makes for a good fight but not great.

I'm just saying this because they are making it sound like its a fight that will be talked about for ages.

Well.... it IS coming on the heels of that other "epic" fight, Floyd-Pac.
That alone will make it a great fight in comparison.
    Boxing needs Cotto-Canelo right now.

To be honest I think it is a good exciting fight, the young up and comer who is rebuilding after the Mayweather fight against the old dog.

Will age and experiance prosper or is it a changing of the guard?

They are both big names, they are both pretty evenly matched, its hard to pick an outright favourite.

I for one will be staying up to watch it.

I think it's a good fight but keep reading about it being a classic and don't see it either.

There's at least three fights this weekend i'm more looking forward too (if I was MEX/PR I would understandably be more excited though).

I guess everyone has their own way to judge a fights worthiness, mine is simple. Do I want to see it? If I want to see the fight, I don't listen to most of the negative opinions. It's a fight, I like to watch fights!

It's a name matchup, but both fighters have lost their biggest fights and Cotto more so despite fighting far better opposition.

It's not the Mega fight that Golden Boy are trying to hype it up as, but it's a decent fight. If it's for a title , it should be a LMW title and forget about this 155lb nonsense. Let's be Fair , Cotto is on his way out really.
2 big names, 2 decent fighters, but I don't see it being that close. Canelo will "Old Man" Cotto I think.

It's a great style matchup, really as close as one could get to a "surefire war". It's Mexico vs Puerto Rico, always brings a great atmosphere, always brings out the greatness of the fighters. The boxers tend to fight more for the fans in these kind of matchups, there's this sense of who is going to show the Machismo, who is going to show the cojones, and it should be a blood and guts battle.

I think the fighters are well matched, Cotto is older but he's got a good trainer in Freddie Roach, he's still got some mileage left in him and Canelo is younger and really needs a great showing to get back to where he needs to be to achieve his potential.

This SHOULD be a fight of the year candidate and if it isn't then shame on both the fighters because we as fans know that when both of these guys are at their best their styles will mesh perfectly and cause for a great all action phonebooth kind of fight.

Label me a cynic, but the ready for anything .... he boxes, we out box... he slugs we outslug sounds like more talk up from cotto (mostly roach). I think Cotto knows hes been in too many wars to jump feet first into the trenches and start swinging away. Especially with a kid who has the fraction of the mileage. He'll start looking his age after 3 to 4 rounds of that.

Considering Canelos habit for slow starts (sans kirkland) I think cotto will look to come out, establish the jab and try catch canelo early maybe with a counter like he did martinez and put canelo mentally behind the 8 ball, and build a lead. Save some for the middle rounds for a canelo surge and swing with him for a a round and then try to finish smart. So I don't think this will be a brawl for it all that a lot of people are expecting. For canelo, this might be like the trout fight. Cotto will have more pop but he'll have to be smart in choosing when to sit down his punches to use it. I also think his legs get heavier than trouts near the end. If Canelo floors it from start to finish and grinds him down, i think it will be enough.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

I expect a see-saw battle, Cotto early, Canelo mid, Cotto late.

Cotto is like Arturo Gatti, he's been TAUGHT to box but in his heart and soul he's a slugger, he's a brawler, he's got bad intentions....Canelo will be durable, but Cotto's digs to the body aren't for the average fighter, they'd stop anyone.

I still swear Miguel Cotto was the ONLY legitimate threat to beating Floyd Mayweather Jr.....if only he had been with Pedro Diaz or Freddie Roach for longer before that match. But it is what it is....and Floyd has perfect timing always when it comes to when to fight someone.

Not so much overrated as over politicked maybe. All the contrasts are there, style, points in career, one who has been to the mount and another who is looking for his first 'scalp' and then the whole MexiRico clash and history. I think without all of the hair splitting on lbs and trinkets and both already being maneuvered/played up to or away from the real middleweight threat..it would simply be a very enticing jr middleweight mega fight and that's enough. On a side and it seems to be said everytime..for a ppv the undercard is non existent! In that regard and as a lone selling point..it is overrated.

Miura-Vargas should be a fun fight but asking 64.99 here is comical. I could go another 20 years without seeing Velez

Manny v Floyd was overrated, this can not be worse than that.
