Paul Williams is a trainer now

I don't understand this, not because he is paralyzed, because he didn't use the advantages he had. That seems like a basic ingredient of being a smart fighter.

I agree, he wasn't in any way a tactician and clearly being paralyzed would majorly affect his ability to train fighters regardless. Obviously all power to him for trying and I hope it works out on some level though.

Guy gave everything to the sport so best luck to him and good to see him still connected. Sounds like this may be a singular thing as the fighter Justin DeLoach is a childhood friend and proposed it to Williams. Good point on Williams never using natural gifts but also wondering and not trying to be an ass, but will Williams be outside or inside the ring with his chair and all? Not exactly easy access inside of a minute. Shobox airs the fight March 25th

As far as his skill level....it's not a requirement, let alone a prerequisite to being a great trainer.
Props to the journeyman fighter Freddie Roach that developed Pacquiao's right hand. After his loss to Morales, he was written off as a one handed fighter.

Props to D'amato ...amateur fighter who never turned pro.
Props to Enzo Calzaghe a friggin jazz musician trained Joe to a potential legend.

Sometimes the worst coach, trainer is the one who became a champ.
Be it Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, Larry Bird per NBA...who all admitted ..being a champ didn't mean you can coach/train others to become that.

Roy Jones Jr, to Pernell Whitaker failed miserably.

If Paul can prevent his handicap from being an issue, he may be the one to detect holes, flaws...that he himself fail victim to...for the love of a good fight I assume!!!!!

I think you are looking at the wrong thing though, talent. Yes, talented guys usually struggle because things aren't as easy for others as they were for the talented athlete. That fits my point. Paul had great talents he didn't use. Roach got the most out of himself and it can be argued he does that for fighters.

You never know though I suppose, Bird was a great coach, Magic was lousy. I just think a cerebral fighter would be more logical as a trainer. Best of luck to Paul though. Life goes on sitting or standing so it's best to get moving yourself.

PW IMO had a similar issue as Diego Corrales: two linky fighters who couldn't maintain power once they moved up in weight. But that didn't address your question, so I digress....

Loads of ex-fighters train guys with styles unlike their own. And you don't need to be in the ring to give instructions between rounds.

The issue I always had with Williams, corrales, and to a degree margarito is that they were tall fighters, fighting a short fighters fight so I am split where to draw the line between talent and height. It's exciting when you mix it up, but you can take a lot of damage and a guy like corrales always had himself in a position to win fights by slugging it out. Williams size allowed him to travel up and down the scales and still probably be the bigger guy in most of the classes he fought in. Im not sure how much of the intangibles (heart, size/durability) will transfer over, as has alread been stated... i'm sure Paul can contribute, even if its an extra set of eyes (margarito, maybe just one-- sorry, i had to ).

As for getting the instruction to the fighter, I believe tyson used panama lewis for one fight and had to buy him a front row seat and had a go between parroting the instructions. I think paul may could sit on near the apron in the corner and dip under the bottom rope or talk in between them.

Paul i think realized his potential i mean the guy was 42-2 also beat everyone that ever beat him. Man had wins on Margarito, Carlos and Martinez and few other good wins was champ at 147 and 154 i would say that pretty big accomplishments i think he got the most of oh his talent.

That has to be right up there with top 10 ko's of year so far! The poor guy literally looked like a puppet who had his strings cut and just collapsed into his legs. Brutal!
