That is very young. It is a shame that he could never really turn that amateur prowess into success as a pro. Great character outside of the ring and did a huge amount for black people (boxers or not) in an age when the NF and skinheads still made life difficult on the street.

It's a great shame. He was a very talented fighter and was touted as the "big thing" before Eubank, Watson and Benn. Unfortunately after a promising start to his pro career, it went a bit pear shaped (couple of ko's ithink) and that opened the door for the others.
Technically a beautiful fighter if memory serves me right.
    RIP.

Jesus was he only 53? Fucking Cancer really is a cunt of a disease.
That's some record 10 Amateur titles, i'm just a few years too young to remember many of his fights but was well aware of him and the name.
His nephew Cyrus played for Northern Ireland over the weekend in their World Cup qualifier

Errol Christie was going to be the English Sugar Ray Leonard but for various reasons that did not materialise.

I remember his fight with Mark Kaylor had racist comments attached to it and he lost in a war but can not remember if it was televised.

I defiantly remember Michael Watson smashing him up very easily in a warm up fight at the end of his career.

That's the thing, did he forgot boxing skills in kaylor fight and go all out war?

In his early life he talks about time with Emmanuel Steward, with hindsight he would have stayed with him longer, and the times with the Eubanks camp.

Just seen his book on Amazon, so will look to purchase.

Christie and Kaylor were both knocked down in the first round and it was personal and bitter between them when they fought one another.

Frank Bruno has led tributes to champion boxer Errol Christie, who has died after battling lung cancer.

The former European middleweight title winner's death was announced on Sunday by his nephew, Derby and Republic of Ireland footballer Cyrus Christie.

Bruno said he was "very, very saddened" to hear about the death of such a talented man. Chris Eubank described him as "one of the old masters".

Christie, 54 and from Coventry, is the only Briton to win 10 amateur titles.

    More updates on this story

He captained England in amateur boxing between 1980-83, and in 1982 was crowned U-19 European amateur champion in East Berlin, described as a rare win for a British amateur at the time.

His family described him as a "very, very special man" who was loved by many. He fought the disease for two "long" years.

Christie, who turned professional in 1982 and was seen as Britain's finest amateur talents, spent his final days with his son who had been caring for him.

A crowd-funding page has also been set up ahead of his funeral.

BBC boxing pundit Steve Bunce said Christie was British boxing's finest amateur boxer and turned professional live on television in 1982.

"No British boxer at that time had ever been under pressure quite like Errol when he turned professional," he said.

"He was expected to win multiple world titles and become the greatest British boxer in history - it was simply a matter of time.

"It started to go wrong in just his 14th fight. Errol was just 21 at the time. The dream was over but he fought for another 10 years.

"He was one of the nicest and kindest boxers I have met in the sport."

    Errol Christie's career

Christie is in the Guinness Book of Records for winning 10 British amateur titles.

His final professional fight record stands at 41 - 32 wins, eight defeats and one draw.

He split £82,500 with Mark Kaylor for their 1985 fight at Wembley Arena - a record for a non-title fight at the time.

His last fight was in 1993 at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester where he lost to Trevor Ambrose in the second round.

During this career, he was ITV's main boxing attraction, often in publicity shots with the stars of the channel's light-entertainment shows. There is a famous picture of hundreds of ITV stars and at the back, topless and waving a Union flag, is Errol.

After retiring, he sold baby clothes at Lewisham Market.

Legendary trainer Emanuel Steward said Errol Christie should have been “one of Britain’s best ever” fighters.

Former European middleweight title winner Christie’s death was announced on Sunday.

He had been battling lung cancer.

Steward, who ran the famous Kronk gym in Detroit, said Christie “had the better” of sparring sessions against many high-profile fighters including Frank Tate and Milton McCrory.

Before Steward’s death in October 2012, he told 5 live boxing correspondent Mike Costello that Christie was “one of the best talents” who ever walked into his gym.

This clip is from the Costello & Bunce podcast on Monday 12 June 2017.

Just got to the last paragraph in page 79 which gives reminds me of perhaps why his health took the turn it did. Gripping read, even reminding me of those early years.
