Good to see Cotto win the fight in the fashion that he did as I wanted him to.
OK.... So we know Urkal might get 1st dibbs on Cotto, if not who else can Cotto fight. Cintron so he could try and pick up the IBF title?
Juan Lazcano? Collazo even?
Regarding Larry Merchant, I'm a fan of him in general, and he's always good for a couple laughs during a broadcast, but there's no denying that his performance on the air has slipped dramatically the last few years. Watch an old HBO telecast from the 90's, and you'll be amazed by how much insight he provides and how much talking he does. Nowadays, he basically sits there in silence for 3 minutes and then chimes in with a one-liner in between rounds. Steward is really the color commentator now with Merchant being the third guy.
As for getting negative and cranky, I think his recent comments on Mayweather are a pretty good indicator. Back in the 90's, he would constantly defend Pernell Whitaker for fights that were labeled "boring" and that weren't crowd pleasing. There were tons of fights where Whitaker would outclass his opponent, but the crowd would be booing over the lack of action, and Merchant would call out the fans for being foolish to boo Whitaker. Now Mayweather turns in a performance that's similar to many of Pernell's, and Merchant complains that Mayweather is boring, it's hypocritical.
could be wrong, but im fairly certain that the winner of Collazo and his next fighter (forgot the name) is to fight the winner of last nights WBA clash - so now Cotto...Originally Posted by CutMeMicK

You are absolutely right If you had the sound turned off you can see that Ike was more than competitive last night and is far from done even at 37... Hbo crew made it seem like a one sided wash for Winky, and it was far from that...
When I flipped back to HBO I also noticed Gary Sheffield Standing behind Winky during introductions tooOriginally Posted by TheDukeof74
Cotto was great IMO. Took me awhile but I've been coming around to him and now I'm officially a fan.
Margarito looked a little rusty but a pretty good win. Its easy to discredit Clottey by saying he lost to Baldomir but if you've actually seen the fight instead of just looking on boxrec then you'd know Clottey was on the way to a UD before he got DQ'd.
I don't know where Lacy goes now.
Winky-Quartey was easy to call.
I hope its not Urkal, that doesn't excite me at all. Is Lazcano fighting at 147? Cintron or Collazo would be fine with me.Originally Posted by CutMeMicK
From the post fight linterview it sounds like Cotto is going to fight Urkal next because he is the mandatory for the WBA. After that it is whoever they stick in front of him. He didnt shy away from a potential Margorito fight which I think would be a great fight to watch.Originally Posted by OumaFan

Haven't had time to watch the fights, can you fwooking believe it? The 1 weekend my best fighters are fighting and my net didn't work?! What the fwook! Anyway, sounds like Cotto was awesome and in my opinion,P4P material. I said it before,he's fought a lot of good fighters, and Quintana is the cream of the crop.(and someone fill me in but didn't Quintana KO a guy who ko'ed Collazo in 3? I forgot his name, will check that later, makes Cotto's win look even more impressive)
As for Tony, sounds like he was a bit rusty but having seen/read 3 round by rounds, sounds like he was a deserved winner. Regardless of who broke what and where,Tony is a slow starter anyway and he was taking on an opponent many in this forum predicted would either win big on points or knock him out. I recognised it was a tough fight,Clottey is one of the most dangerous and avoided WW and he(Clottey) knew it would be a one in a lifetime chance so I'm glad Tony won. Tony should be given credit for taking such a dangerous fight in the first place, this was no Santos Pakau,no Sharmba Mitchell, not some shot fighter or fighter coming off a loss,it was a dangerous, hungry and practically unbeaten guy.
He's not being biased. Just doing what he usually does and that's speak truthfully and not go with the hype. You're just mad cause he said something about PBF and you're a fan of his. OH wait, I know why you're really mad, You're a huge Hopkins supporter and he has often called him boring that had boil your blood. Guess what though, it's all true. so you gotta live with it.Originally Posted by wacko3205

The guy your talking about that CQ, KO'ed in 3 is Edwin Cassiani not a big name. I wouldd't put tooo much emphasis on this but it does show that he can spark someone out (CQ).Originally Posted by El Gamo

It just makes Cotto's win seem even better!
As for Margarito, having seen the fight,I had it same as Bernstein(commentator,I think that's his name). I think Margarito beat an awesome fighter in Clottey, and I think Clottey could cause anyone in the division problems simply because he never lowers his guard! I felt Tony was wearing him out towards the end though.
I was slightly dissappointed in Margarito, usually, his punches have very good snap but for some reason, possibly ring rust, possibly the bad ankle, and apart from the bodyshots(which although he used well,he should have used more of)his punches lack the power they usually have. I'm not saying he is a murderous puncher but he certainly has some pop in both hands, more than he displayed against Clottey.
Next year should be abig year for Margarito,I'm looking forward to it..
Wadda' ya guys think about Cottos hook to the body. DO you think he hurt CQ internally?
Discuss it here....![]()
