I was a Joe Cortez fan but he really fucked up in Paul Williams last fight against that blown up lightweight from new zealand.

Nerrr i wouldnt have said he fucked up that bad..
Not enough to say he ruined his good name or anything..
It was santos paquao ... And in all fairness the kid just wouldnt die..
He'd look close and think about stopping it and the kid just kept on fighting..
But it was a bit too long til joe stopped it..Not too harsh though..
    Peace

In context, I think his better judgement failed though, it was obvious that williams' opponent was a late replacement, he was no competition, he was getting beat down and common sense failed Cortez. Thats what made it so terrible for me.

Go back over the past ten years and see who was the ref in the most FIGHTS OF THE YEAR...

    Steve Smoger.

Mitch Halpern was definitely destined to be the next great one, like Mercante, Sr. & Cappucino. I always have questions when I hear about suicides concerning people from/in Las Vegas.

Also on my list of favs: Joe Cortez, Tony Weeks

On my hate list: Jay Nady (what a dork!), Laurence Cole, and the ref from the Miranda-Abraham fight!

Smoger is a damn good call. Isn't it weird how boxing fans can love certain ref's. All other sports hate referees no matter who they are, and thats why boxing is so special!

    Thx, yoi!

He (and Halpern) knew to let to boxers fight! Show respect for them, and they will produce magic. He's also a genuinely great guy.

Weeks and Smoger are good ref's. I also like Kenny Bayless. He looks like he loves being a ref.

    Fuck Richard Steele

    Speaking of good refs......
The ref last night in the Pavlik-Zertuche fight did a HELL of a job, and probably saved Zertuche from a life-threatening injury. Did you see the way he DOVE in there when Zertuche dropped his hands and was out on his feet?!?!? He risked getting a shot to his own head by diving in there, but only his fast reflexes saved Zertuche from at least one or two more unprotected head shots.

Kudos to a FANTASTIC job at ending a fight!!
