Yeah, a couple of olympic champions and world champions.
Such as Anton Geesink who first broke trough the dominance of the japanese to win gold at the Tokyo olimpics

Dude stick around. I think i am the only Judoka that posts regularly on the MMA forum.

Judo is coming more to the forefront in MMA so its good to see. I haven't trained in a while since arthritis has caught up with me a bit but hoping to get back into it in the next couple of months.

Boxing and jiu jitsu/BJJ will give you all the skills you need. Judo and Sambo are good too. But I'd use those techniques more as a supplemetary type deal. Excellent throws in both though.

See Brockton i would have to disagree a bit there mate. From a self defence perspective you want to keep the fight standing. In a bar fight or protecting yourself from some scumbag then the ground is the last place you want to be. Even if the guy hasnt got any mates who want to jump on your head whilst you are trying to get the guy in a omoplata then some bystander who isn't involved will often try to play soccer with your head. (unless of course its an organised one on one) because thats what tends to happen when drink is involved.

The ground is the last place you want to be.

As i've said before. BJJ is a fantastic art and i respect it hugely. Its great in the octagon but on a cold saturday night outside a burger joint with piss and broken glass on the floor it will be found wanting. Judo however will be your best friend. It has the throws to slam if your primary tools (striking) fail and if it does go to the ground we practice enough newaza (groundfighting) to nullify 99% of fools (unless you are unlucky enough to come up against a BJJ player). So many underestimate Judo newaza, its pretty explosve. No waiting in guard.

To be able to defend yourself properly you need a primary toolset and a secondary backup toolset should your primary fail.

Striking is primary but if your pre empt fails and the striking goes to ratshit and it ends in a clich or in clinching range. You want to get the F*** out of there and quick before it goes to the deck. Then you are in another whole world of S***.

I use boxing/combatives for striking and i've been a judoka for years, it just happens to be a fantastic support system and is porbably the best self defence art going (as a stand alone art.......then again i am slightly biased )

Thats why i asked at the beiginning what he wants to get out of it.

I agree with almost all of that. Being a former amatuer boxer, and being only semi-well versed in jiu jitsu, i would prefer to keep it off the ground. I realize the dangers of a guy's buddies doing the Mexican hat dance on my head if I go down. However I think the jiu jitsu is superior IF the fight goes there. You'll notice I mentioned judo and sambo as being excellent for throws. I just think that if he's new to the boxing/ma game, and he's already taking boxing, he'd probably be best served by striking at this point as opposed to executing judo throws which I can say from experience are a LOT more technical than they look. CC for being a judo advocate though.

boxing on its own, 9 times out of 10, will make you a formidable opponent in any bar, all other things being roughly equal. A regular joe wouldn't even be able to touch you, while you pick your shots and pop away at his face...that's how improved you'll be with the ol' fistacuffs. Beyond that I'd add judo or wrestling which gives you the leverage skills in the clinch.
