Default Mundine banks on Calzaghe win over Kessler

    http://www.sportsnut.com.au/category.php?intid=7

Anthony Mundine has a much better chance of beating Joe Calzaghe than Mikkel Kessler in the Australian star’s quest to be crowned the world’s best super-middleweight, according to one of the world’s leading boxing managers.

"I think Mundine’s speed would give him a better chance against Calzaghe who doesn’t carry Kessler’s power."

I'd have a small wager Sven "powderpuff" Ottke didn't posses Kesslers power either.

He isn't skilled enough to fight a tactician like Kessler. IMO Kessler is a superior outside fighter to Calzaghe. For individual punches he can match the speed of Calzaghe, but he throws his punches with better technique(probably because he doesn't have to worry about hurting his hands), and he has much better balance.

I should have added this to my other comment, but I also feel that Mundine would give Calzaghe troubles because Calzaghe is used to being hte faster man, and Mundine is way faster than him.

Faster than Calzaghe ? Highly unlikely imo... Calzaghe has one of the best P4P handspeeds , sure it is a bit slappy, but he is very fast.

Calzaghe only throws fast combinations. His individual punches like his jabs, crosses, hooks aren't all that quick.

The only way Mundine deserves a sniff is if he beats the loser of this fight. Forget the winner, he just isnt worthy.

The Mundine nut huggers will be on to burn you at the stake for that one. Although I totally agree, what has he done to deserve a shot at either when it's clear he's not in their league?

I cant see this fight happening, Mundine needs to up his stock if he wants Calzaghe to take notice, Calzaghe no doubt will want Jermaine Taylor if he beats Pavlik, or even Winky or Hopkins, i think if Winky wins that is an easy fight to make, we know Winky travels, and if Kessler is getting $5 million to fight Joe Winky with HBO on board would easily ge that if not more.

Mundine has little or no chance of facing Cazlaghe.

After Calzaghe V Kessler the winner will need an easy fight, so Mundine will be perfect!

Totally agree. He's already lost to Kessler, got beat by Siaca (who was Ko'd by Kessler and Mitchell - who himself was KO'd by Calzaghe) and got completely sparked by the lightest hitting Super-Middle champ of all time.

"The Mans" results against Green & Soliman were fairly impressive but he's behind Froch and Bute in line for a big shot.

If he can make more than one defence, then he can start to talk a little.

I have yet to see the Siaca fight but the Ottke fght was his 11th pro fight,he was easily beating Ottke. And he had a limited or no amatuer career(I'm not sure which because I think I read Mundine came to boxing from football) which makes his accomplishments even more outstanding.

He also put up a great fight v Kessler,I had Kessler winning by 3 but again,Mundine gave him his toughest fight. How can Mundine be behind Froch if he's fought and beaten better fighters than him and gave a fringe P4P guy by far his toughest fight?

I'm not a nuthugger but I'm not blind to Mundine's skills either. His handspeed is sensational and that is with single punches and combinations. He has a solid jab,a superb right hand and a great left hook to the body. He can fight inside and out. He can counter and I can only think of 2/3 fighters who have a better shoulder roll than him.

I'd still favour JC and Kess over him but Mundine is improving allllll the time. Question marks over his chin-he took bombs from Kessler.1 handed fighter-watch the SOliman fight. I'd like to see him fight Bute.

Great post Gamo. Agree 100 percent.
Yes, just 18 months before he fought Ottke Mundine was a rugby league footballer - a leading player in the Australian competition - with a very high profile - a bit like a top US quarterback.
he had no boxing experience apart from four non-sanctioned amateur bouts in new Caledonia where he went for a holiday with his father (Tony Mundine who fought Monzon for the middleweight title and beat Emile Griffith)

He admitted he wasn't really knocked out by Ottke but collapsed as much from fatigue as anything else as he had never been ina hard fight, much less one with a world champ.

His achievements have been great but like you I belive Kessler would edge him again in a rematch and Joe would be too clever.

But you can't deny he is a rare talent.
