Recognized light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, said that he respects Ricky Hatton more than undisputed super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe, because Hatton left the UK to take big fights on American soil.

"I respect Ricky Hatton more because he understood that in order to be considered great in a country that has produced great talent in many sports for many years, you have to get your ass over here. Joe’s known but he’s not well-known, and there’s a difference," Hopkins said. "Until you become known in the world more than you are in your neighborhood, then you’re only a neighborhood champion and Calzaghe’s a neighborhood champion, that’s what he is. So he has to pack his bags and come to the legend that is Bernard Hopkins, step out of his crib in Wales where he’s got his bottle on one side and his pacifier on the other and set foot on my soil so that we can get this on."

Hopkins said that he's only willing to do the fight with Calzaghe if it's on America soil, and if the money is a 60-40 split in his favor. He refuses to do a 50-50 split.

"Joe’s with HBO now, so he’s halfway there already. My offer is 60-40, 50-50 being out of the question, but we can talk," Hopkins said. "When he steps off the plane I’m going to be wearing my Yankee Doodle Dandy red-white-and-blue uniform, just like Apollo Creed, with James Brown’s Coming to America playing on the speakers, and I’ll show Joe what being world champion means, for I am the personification of the American Dream.”

the truth is calzaghe has been lucky in the RESPECT that jeff lacy was prepaired to come over to the the uk to fight him.......if lacy was like joe and 100% refused to leave home then that fight would never have happened the same goes with the kessler fight, kessler took the fight, got on a plane and fought joe in wales, again joe refused to go to denmark even tho kesslers team offered him 3.4 million, had it not been for those two aggreeing to travel over here joe would be nowhere near hbo tv

its time joe either goes over and does the biz or just admit he hasn't got the steel to travel to the usa. figues show RICKY HATTONS fight get more viewers on SKY T.V then when joe was fighting there, considering rickys fights are at 4am british time he got 600,000 last fight which sky said is a tremendous number for that time slot

whatever the split, joe would get a carreer high purse if he fought a big name in america, at one of the legendary venues of boxing, on a legendary boxing network HBO, infront of the biggest names in boxing, fighters, promters, boxing writers, stars from screen, stage and television would all be there, worldwide coverage......is there a better way to stamp a final statement on your carreer........ NO!!! so if he doesn't take the fight then we have to say he's a good champion on his own soil and nothing more

he should take the fight and prove people wrong...... if he doesn't then he's just all talk and no minerals

Hatton's last fight wasn't even on SKY.

Calzaghe last fought on SKY three years ago against Salem.

Anyway, Hatton was MUCH bigger than Calzaghe back then, and is bigger than Calzaghe now. Nothing's gonna change that.

I have to be honest. That sounds fair if not a tad generous. Seriously.

I think Joe would have gone to Denmark to fight Kessler, he'd fought in Denmark before. Kessler was happy
to fight in Cardiff because he got paid a fortune to go to Cardiff where they could get a crowd of 50,000 plus.
Kessler wouldn't have made as much if the fight was in Denmark.
Joes now said he'll fight in America against Hopkins, I think that was his downfall, he should have said he
wanted the winner of Tito-RJJ and Hopkins would have probably offered 50-50, can't see Warren taking 40
even if Joes up 4 it

Its a shame that the build up to a Hopkins fight is always better than the fight it self.

I have to agree with you porky. Bhop knows he cant win this one like i said previusly Joe should just agreee to this and ill put money on BHop thinking of something else he wants...If he does noone can blame Joe for not bothering. Otherwise If Joe wants it bad he would just agree and get his ass to the US.

haven't read all the posts here so will just say I agree that this is Hopkins way of saying he doesn't want to get in the ring with Joe - should be an even split. Hopkins is a legend yes but Calzaghe is on his way there and has the 44-0 record.

if it has to be 60-40 then it's Joe's move as to how badly he wants Hopkins' name on his record. Regardless of his age B-Hop is still very much at the top of his game and I would rather see Joe take on him than a washed up Jones or Trinidad - if you ask me beating either of these two doesnt proves nothing and will certainly do nothing to enhance his legacy

Joe was willing to go to Denmark and fight Kessler but there was more money for both fighters if it happend in Cardiff thats why Kessler was more than happy to go and fight in Cardiff.

I'm beginning to believe that Hopkins doesn't want to share a Ring with Calzaghe

kessler got 50% basicaly for the fight in the uk

    they both made roughly $5mill

Hopkins fought a p4p fighte rin his last fight and didnt even get 10k (half would of been given away anyhow!)

Calzaghe has sold nearly 90,000 tickets in his last 2 fights! one against a reality tv runner up (35k) the other against a very good fighter, but one of whom most knew in the uk from what the papers said.. and that took in more than 50k!

everyone knew who wright and hopkins were...

i still think if push comes to shove 60/40 is a deal warren should take. 50/50 is more than fair tho IMO.

I think the point is that 50/50 is fair and thats how it should be, but if it gets Joe the fight he wants and thinks he needs then take the 40%. If he wins it will mean he probably makes more in his next fight.
