One Thing I Liked About Roy Jones Jr Last Night.

I've never even considered Jones fighting Tarver on Johnson again but they make perfect sense no that I have.

I think he and a few of us should step back & take a deep breath before we dust off the P4P talk.

Fact is Jones could not go all out for the whole 3 min of any round...or...Jones was afraid to try a pace to fast?...or...he was happy just knowing he was doing enough to win the rounds...not the first time in Jones career he has been guilty of that...just now he does not have the explosive sneaky shots to make a KO out of it

No way this version of Jones beats Calzaghe...He can not keep up with Joe...he would be competitive at times and have his moments but in the end he is out worked...

Jones looked OK. His hand speed is still great, but his reflexes aren't what they used to be and a game fighter with Power should KO him. He was very cautious and let Tito outwork him for a few rounds. If he does this against a very active and younger fighter he will lose. Tito looked God awful. He looked fat and out of shape. He had man boobs and looked like he could easily cut 15 pounds and fight at 154 where who knows how he'd look.

Not a very exciting fight and Roy was too cautious, he should've gone for the knockout as it was obvious an out of shape Tito wasn't going to be able to hurt him. I don 't think Jones should fight again.

Oscar ran like a deer after feeling a punch from that "one dimension", and Vargas? Please... don't even go there. Vargas was ruined by Trinidad, and Oscar benefited from this fact a couple of years later. So let's just shorten your list to B-Hop, Winky and Jones. ok?

No how about we keep Oscar and Vargas in that list? Oscar can stay because he ran thinking he had the fight in the bag, not because he 'felt a punch from Tito'. Oscar made Tito look awful for most of the fight.
Vargas can stay because he was like 20 years old when he fought Trinidad. Trinidad won the first round 10-6 which should mean you have the fight in the bag against an unexperienced 20 year old. However Vargas practically had the fight level at the half way point because Trinidad couldn't deal with him when he started to box. Vargas stays.

I was "impressed" with both.

For a couple of fossils they put on a decent fight.

Tito didn't look ridiculous at the weight (although totally ineffective) and Roy looked, at times, like a fighter that wasn't totally gone and could possibly still have chances in a "meaningful" fight.

Both guys gave a very good account of themselves imo. Jones made some adjustments and was able to do some of the things he did in his prime. He did miss a lot when he put his punches together though, but that is also a credit to Titos defence, which wasnt bad for the most part. His combinations were fast and accurate too, but roy was able to block a lot of punches because of his adjusted defence. Still, I think both guys should retire but I doubt either will.

Why should Roy fight Tarver? He should fight conqueror of Tarver in Hopkins, beause Hopkins beat Tarver there is no use in Jones beating him because Tarver is old news. Glen Johnson is the wrong type of fighter for roy to fight at this point because he doesn't have the legs to keep pressure fighters off him and an elite pressure fighter will eat him up.

One thing I did not like about Roy is he argued with his corner man between rounds...his corner told him he needed to circle to the right because he was getting caught with shots...he argued and said he wasn't ...I could see exactly what they were speaking of but Roy felt they were wrong.....

Also IMO Roy started to get a bit too cockey....OK Tito was not hurting him granted but Tito was catching him good early on and he could have pulled out a nice power shot and Roy would have ate it...maybe not been put down but all the same why take the chance?...because in other fights when he is not getting caught hard he will do it again...thats how he got KO'd by Johnson...being arrogant....

He did a good job with keeping his hands up last night but...I still see those little bad habits he can no longer afford to make due to the fact he is no longer young and has that natural ability to move out of the way quick enough

Don't know about that Daxx. RJJ has always run his corner himself. That's his thing with his trainer. My memory of that was he questioned what he was told then asked a question about what Tito was doing and said no he's doing (whatever he said - can't remember) his trainer said "ok as long as that happens and you do it" and when he got back from the end of the round it was all smiles because it went just as RJJ said. His trainer acknowledged it with him during the next break. Also i thought he kept his hands where they needed to be for this fight. His right was on his chin the whole fight keeping that big left hook from tito at bay. As far as whether his left being down is an issue in other fights we'll just have to see. He had both hands up a lot more in this fight than in earlier fights of his and i think against a guy with a big right he would also have his left nice and tight, but i guess we'll have to see if that happens or not. But what you said about RJJ realising he's not 20 anymore makes me think he will in future fights.

Even more pleasing was the fact that he wanted to box textbook. I f you listen to the conversation in the corner between two and three The trainers say "Ok If you want to box it's your show."

However I did find a number of flaws with the Jones that showed up at the weekend. In the early going he did little and absorbed a number of shots from Trinidad. Now that was well and good versus the faded Trinidad, however put in there with a fresher younger guy his own size, where he would be forced to avoid those early shots and fight for twelve rounds, can he do it? I really think not.

Despite what many say, I enjoyed the fight. I think Tito displayed a big heart and a little development in his boxing since the Wright fight, albeit accompanied by a considerable amount of ring rust.

A good fight and what should rightly be a decent send off for both fighters.

cc donny good points. I think he was trying to use a combination of the Winky defence to deflect Titos punches, and his own head movement that he used so much in his prime. Jones definately did his homework and studied tapes of Trinidads two losses. I was surprised and have to admit, Jones is the fastest 39 year old fighter ive ever seen. But like you said he he stood right in front of Titio too much and let him throw punches at his body then upstairs even though most of them didnt land flush.
