Margarito: “I will finish Cotto in four!”

Antonio Margarito is a legendary figure in California gym circles. His sparring sessions are very spirited to say the least: they actually feature more action than most Floyd Mayweather's real fights.

Most fights are won and lost in the gym and "The Tijuana Tornado" takes this cliché to heart. He decided to hold off on having children so that he can fully dedicate himself to his career. You have to be in great physical shape to be Antonio's sparring partner and even then you might go home with bruised ribs. Last year, Paul Williams tried to destroy Margarito's legend by saying that he hurt Tony in sparring a few years ago and was sent home right away. Whether it is true or not, I guess, we will never know, but Williams had to fight a perfect fight last summer in Carson, California to win a close decision over Margarito, who seemed a stronger man down the stretch.

This summer, the job of destroying Antonio's legend is taken by Puerto Rican superstar, Miguel Cotto, who knows it is not an easy task. Their highly anticipated match up is for all the marbles in welterweight division:
"La Batalla" is scheduled to take place on July 26th, 2008 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas and will be televised by HBO Pay Per View, starting at 6:00 pm.

"I do not have to train hard for Tony'" said Cotto during Los Angeles press conference in May. I train hard for every fight."

A week ago I ran into Todd Duboeuf, president of Top Rank and asked him to pick a winner of this battle.

The response I got was: " Miguel Cotto is a very special fighter."

Less than a month away from fight time, I decided to go down to Montebello to check up on Antonio's progress and to see where he trains at Latin Snake Gym.

Antonio was skipping rope vigorously. I came over and introduced myself and then I got a second prediction.

"I will finish Cotto in four," said Margarito through his interpreter. "Put this down in your paper, if he fights, I will finish him in four and if he runs I will finish him in eight."

This was definitely worth driving to Montebello for. Now I wish I could go to Puerto Rico to check on Miguel's training camp and see what he has to say.

Miguel Cotto also said he would KO Margarito in 4 its all BS no one is stopping anyone early, the only KO i can see is if Cotto lands a perfect body punch on Margarito. Other than that it should go the distance with Cotto counter punching his way to a UD.

I can see an early stoppage and thats if Cotto tries to war with Margarito.

If its a war Tony all the way if Cotto boxes a pretty wide UD, its all on Cotto imo he can box and win or try and go blow for blow and get his head taken off.

Miguel Cotto is a smart boxer he has improved alot since his wild fight with Ricardo Torres, theres no way he does anything stupid and stands toe to toe with Margarito unless he has to. But i think Cotto will do better on the inside than most people think, Cotto has the much shorter punches, and his punches will get to Margarito first, add to the fact that Cotto has surperior hand speed and he can win exchanges on the inside.

Do you have the link to the article where Cotto says he will KO Tony in four? I have never ever heard Cotto ever say that he was going to knock out anyone. The only thing I hear the robot say is that I come to do my job and I will beat anyone my company and my promoter puts in front of me

Where did you see Cotto say that he will KO Margarito in 4?

I have never seen Cotto predict how, and when he will win a fight, he always just says that he will win.

I think Cotto will win by UD. I would not be surprised if Margarito has Cotto hurt, or even knocked down, but Cotto has a will like no other, and if that happens, he'll put himself together with even more determination to win.

Everyone talks about Cotto's body punching, and jab, and tend to overlook his ring smarts, and his ability to make adjustments during a fight. The Mosley fight is a perfect example, many were saying that starting in the 9th, Mosley was backing Cotto up, that's not the case, Cotto made an adjustment, and changed up his style, simple as that. Mosley changed his style during the fight, why was is it so difficult for some to get that Cotto did the same thing?

As much as I am excited for this fight, and I know what a great fight it will be, it's the kind of fight where you don't want to see a loser, because you know that both of these guys will give it all they have. I like both fighters, but I have to go with my main guy Cotto on this one.

To answer your question Danny/Diane it was from an old article its just someone brought back the thread by replying to it recently, so i thought it was a new article but it was from 2006.

Well, actually in that article, Cotto did not say that he will knock Margarito out, he gave his standard answer.

"Margarito is a strong fighter, a great fighter, but I'm going to beat him if we fight....There are a lot of great champions at 147 lbs., but whoever my promotional team chooses to put in front of me I will beat."

Whoever posted that article, gave a misleading subject title.

But did you read the article? Cotto never said that, who ever posted the article to begin with, changed the title of the thread. So, Cotto never said that. Get your facts right ICB, you are slipping in your old age, you old guard.

That's a pretty bold statement from Tony.

Actually I think Cotto is going to make him look somewhat silly in the 1st 5 or 6 rounds; but if Tony can get him to fight his fight somehow he'll put Cotto out late.

If not it will be a one sided decision for Cotto. And Tony will look retarded if he somehow gets knocked out in from a body shot in the 4th round

Margarito's boyfriend must have written this. Note the unnecessary Mayweather hate.

Nah, but seriously, I know I'm gonna catch heat but sorry Danny and Diane... I like Cotto but I love Tony... I see Tony taking this fight. Not by much but taking it non the less.

Either that or we'll see Tony landing a nice one on Cotto's already-exposed fragile jaw and chin.

I like this attitude from Tony. I think he has been somewhat complacent in some of his past fights but he knows that this is the fight of his life and he is determined to win. I expect Tony to show why they call him the Tornado on July 26!
