It's FAR safer than it used to be. In fact, it's as safe as it can be without taking away the EXITEMENT of the sport, the thing we all watch it for. I don't feel guilty, it's still prize fighting at the end of the day, you can get injured or killed in many sports.

Just because we watch the skills of the fighters rather than a casual fan just waiting for someone to drop, I don't think we have anything to feel guilty about fella.

Safer than ever, yes, but still incredibly dangerous. Of course you can get hurt in other sports, but in what other sport besides MMA is the sole purpose of the athletes to give your opponent a brain injury? So I think simply saying that its safer now or that you can get injured in other sports too is hardly justification.

Just as much to do with defense as it does Offense at times and is much more than Inflicting brain Injurys??.Its another physical sport where bodies clash and as unfortunate as it is...sometimes people get hurt. No,we should not brush it off or just except it even,No one wants This...No one but it is the bull in the china shop that rears its ugly head at times. Its not in need of "justification"....The inherant risk's are known and on the minds of any fighter that has ever stepped into the ring at one time or another.

I hear what you are saying but look at it like this, a lot of sports are dangerous, imagine being a horse jockey in a race fall with 400-500 lbs falling on top of you or a Formula One/Indy car driver who crashes at speeds of 200 mph or American Gridiron Football where a 300lb guy can actually deliberately take you out of the game with a bone crunching tackle. People participate in extreme sports often not as protected as Boxing. it is unfortunate that these things happen but you will find Boxing is very safe for it's athletes who train to the extreme to be prepared any eventuality.

AFP: Welterweight Diaz criticial after brain surgery

Removed the left side of his cranium.... Doesn't sound very appealing, but more positive news it seems then what one could have expected. Seems to have shown movement and is not in a coma.

Man, I really hope he can have a normal life. Also, I really hope he gets some help with the medical bills.

He trained here in Phoenix, I wonder if I should go to that gym and pay my respects.

It's so odd that 3 of the people you can count on to be here every week weren't when this happened. I envy them to be honest, was not a pretty sight.

That's horrible. I wasn't really watching to be honest. I was watching Toney/Rahman and even before that I was just watching bits and pieces of that one. At one point around the ninth when I was actually watching Diaz was moving backwards and not doing much and it seemed to me that at that point there was no real reason for the fight to go on since he wasn't gonna win the fight that way but I didn't realize he was taking that kind of a beating. Hopefully things work out as well as possible.

Did anybody who was watching the fight close see this coming? I remember the George Jones-Beethaven Scotland fight on ESPN 2 years ago and really being worried about Scotland rounds before the tragedy happened, and same with Chavez-Leevander Johnson. I didn't notice Diaz taking that kind of punishment but like I said I wasn't watching closely.

I really didn't think Diaz had taken any real serious punishment.

Well apparently he took a lot of punishment against Golden Johnson recently. That probably had something to do with it. I definitely that the punishment Leevander Johnson took against Javier Jauregui two fights before the Chavez fight had something to do with that.

Well Rodriguez has a home for the right hand all night, he landed a lot of them. But Diaz kept coming through them. But to answer, no, I didn't think about this. As late as the 7th round I thought Rodriguez was gassed and if Oscar kept applying pressure that he could take the fight. Then the eye of Diaz really worsened and that's when he started moving backwards more and more like you said and he kept taking right hands. At that point it probably could have been stopped simply because the eye. They probably checked out the eye a round or two to late but not sure what difference it would have made to be honest.

Definitely wasn't worrying for his safety because like I said he was coming forward and he was even having success with his own right hand but Rodriguez is a sharp shooter, very accurate. Diaz took a lot of very clean blows and fought right through them. It wasn't anything similar to the Leavander Johnson fight which I saw live too. Johnson was taking a very long and drawn out beating in that one and not offering up much in return, Diaz was still in the fight as late as the 7th or 8th round.
