We'd have to wait until this Saturday night to know to include for sure.
Obviously if Peterson (can't remember which one, just hope its not the pop pop pop one) beats Tim Bradley then he'd have to be in. You'd also have to have Bradley in as well to try and regain what he lost.
Then there are a bunch of guys I'd rather have in the tournament than Urango.
You want the tournament to be fun and sell well, Urango is just a former beltholder with no star appeal at all. It would be like having Berrio or Dennis Inkin in the super six at super middle, no thanks! I'd much rather they put Zab Judah in as a wild card, or an old fighter like Campbell for one last chance.
Presuming Bradley wins tomorrow my list would be,
Bradley
Khan
Alexander
Malignaggi (if he beats Diaz, Diaz would be shit at 140) if he loses bring in Zab
Ortiz
Maidana
Nobody can tell me that Victor Ortiz isn't ten times more exciting than Juan Urango and has more potential in the sport. This should be a showcase for the best and the brightest talent, Urango is ok but I wouldn't pay to watch him and he less potential than everyone above. Zab may be done, he may not, but I'd like to see him at 140 again and this would be interestin
i didn't say Ortiz cause IMO he's not ready, i really feel this kid can be something special, but they're going to have to take their time in bringing him up, if the tourney was in a couple years then yea i'd include him but as is right now, i don't think i'd put him there
Yeah you may be right. He brings much more to the tournament than Urango though. We know exactly how good Urango is and it's just below A grade. He's the best of the B level fighters if you will, he can beat the Ngoudjo's and the Baileys of this world but not the Hattons and Berto's. I just see no point in putting him in.
Remember this tournament isn't a meritocracy its about who the public want to see and what will sell. Urango just doesn't sell.
The best thing about the current Super Six is that when it was called you just had no idea who would win. Obviously after the first round things have clarified a little but really going in people could make a case for any of the six winning the whole thing.
Urango is the junior welter equivilant of Andrade or Bika, tough, good enough to get a title shot, but not good enough to beat the best in a weight class, therefore a waste of an entry.
Bradely, Khan and Alexander would be definite picks.
Then Paulie would have to be in if he beats Diaz.
Then the last two shots, I'd rather see Maidana and Ortiz have a go, two hungry young fighters, than I would waste a pick with Urango.
I'd rather have Zab Judah in as the wild card (echoing Taylor maybe) than Urango, he gives the tournament a big name, a former undisputed champ, and an uncertainty about how he would do.
In such an event again you could make a case for any of those fighters being able to win the whole thing, but Urango, I don't know, he just doesn't sell the event for me...
