As the two new teams enter MLS for 2011 they get to do an Expansion draft. This is a really screwy phenomenon in the MLS. When a new team enters, all existing teams choose 11 players to protect and the new teams go through 10 rounds of picks taking unprotected players. No team can have more than 2 players drafted and after one player is drafted from their team, they can protect one more. Portland got to choose first and this is how it played out.

    1st Round
Portland - Dax McCarty 23 - (FC Dallas - M) - FC Dallas protects Daniel Hernandez
Vancouver - Sanna Nyassi 21 - (Seattle Sounders - M) - Seattle Sounders protect Patrick Ianni

    2nd Round
Portland - Eric Brunner 24 - (Columbus Crew - D) - Colombus Crew protects Kevin Burns
Vancouver - Atiba Harris 25 - (FC Dallas - M) - FC Dallas removed from draft

    3rd Round
Portland - Adam Moffat 24 - (Columbus Crew - M) - Columbus Crew removed from draft
Vancouver - Nathan Sturgis 23 - (Seattle Sounders - D) - Seattle Sounders removed from draft

    4th Round
Portland - Anthony Wallace 21 - (Colorado Rapids - D) - Colorado Rapids protect Wells Thompson
Vancouver - Shea Salinas 24 - (Philadelphia Union - M) - Philadelphia Union protect Chris Seitz

    5th Round
Portland - David Horst 25 - (Real Salt Lake - D) - Real Salt Lake protect Collen Warner
Vancouver - Alan Gordon 29 - (Chivas USA - F) - Chivas USA protect Mariano Trujillo

    6th Round
Portland - Robbie Findley 25 - (Real Salt Lake - F) - Real Salt Lake Removed from the draft
    Vancouver - O'Brian White 24 - (Toronto FC - F) - Toronto FC protect Julian de Guzman

    7th Round
Portland - Peter Lowry 25 - (Chicago Fire - M) - Chicago Fire protect Dasan Robinson
Vancouver - Alejandro Moreno 31 - (Philadelphia Union - F) - Philadelphia Union removed from draft

    8th Round
Portland - Jonathan Bornstein 26 - (Chivas USA - M) - Chivas USA removed from draft
Vancouver - Joe Cannon 35 - (San Jose Earthquakes - GK) - San Jose Earthquakes protect Tim Ward

    9th Round
Portland - Jordan Graye 23 - (DC United - D) - DC United protects Kurt Morsink
Vancouver - Jonathan Leathers 25 - (Sporting Kansas City - D) - Sporting Kansas City protect Eric Kronberg

    10 Round
Portland - Arturo Alvarez 25 - (San Jose Earthquakes - M) - San Jose Earthquakes removed from draft
    Vancouver - John Thorrington 31 - (Chicago Fire - M) - Draft ends

    The numbers......

    Average age: 25
    Age range: 21-31

    Distribution by position
    Forward: 4 (20%)
    Midfielder: 9 (45%)
    Defender: 6 (30%)
    Goal Keeper: 1 (5%)

Immediately following the expansion draft Portland traded their first round draft pick Dax McCarty to DC United for Rodney Wallace. This is a shocking decision for me, McCarty is proven quality. No doubt in my mind Vancouver made the better decisions.

Portland has now announced that they have traded fourth round draft pick Anthony Wallace back to Colorado for an allocation (undisclosed amount) of the Rapids 2011 budget.

Portland trades 10th round pick Arturo Alvarez to Real Salt Lake for the overall 22nd pick in the Superdraft.

Vancouver trades 1st round draft pick Sanna Nyassi to Colorado Rapids in exchange for an open international slot.

Vancouver trades 5th round pick Alan Gordon and 7th round pick Alejandro Moreno to Chivas USA in exchange for allocation (undisclosed amount) of the Chivas 2011 budget and an international slot.

In other new Columbus Crew have let go of F/M Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Schelotto will be returning to Argentina to finish out his career.

Vancouver trades 6th round pick O'Brian White to Seattle Sounders for an allocation (undisclosed amount) of the Sounders 2011 budget.

To further add to the confusion the MLS will now stage a "re-entry" draft for the first time. This is a draft to bring players that have expired contracts or declined options by their current teams into other teams. The re-entry draft happens in 2 stages

    Stage 2. 12/15/10 2pm EDT

    Draft order

    1 . DC United

    3 . Philadelphia Union
    4 . New England Revolution
    5 . Houston Dynamo
    6 . Toronto FC

Next on the agenda is the Superdraft January 13th 2011.

The Superdraft will be held in Baltimore 12 pm EDT.

The superdraft may seem odd to those outside the US, but it gives a chance for teams to pick up college players.
