Ali v Holmes documentary

the documentary was on 1 of the espn channels in the uk a little while back. i enjoyed it, holmes came across as a nice bloke.

You are right Larry did come across as a good person. did not rubbish Ali and did not realise but he was crying after he beat him in the dressing room.

I'll look out for this. Only thing is, though i respect he was a great fighter, every time i've come across Larry Holmes he always seemed to come across as a bit of a tit. I once saw him being interviewed and when he was asked about Ali he just wanted to talk about how much better he was and how he would have beaten Ali at any point.

I will definitely look out for this though, hopefully it can change my view on this great champion.

It's funny you mentioned it, because I remember I saw this video yesterday and Holmes is talking bad about Foreman's accomplishment. He's basically downplaying Foreman being the oldest HW champ.

Hasn't Holmes always been bitter about Foreman because Foreman wouldn't get in the ring with him? To an extent I think that is understandable. I think Holmes was a very good champion in his own right, but he definitely has a bit of a chip on his shoulder about not getting the same kind of recognition that other fighters of the 70's recieved. He was right inbetween that golden period and the advent of Tyson.

By that time Ali and Frazier were both shot fighters and Foreman was already retired the 1st time and Shavers and Norton were seriously on the decline along with very good contenders like Chuvalo and Quarry either retired or were done. Holmes is the same age as Foreman both born in 1949 but yet Foreman started his career in the 1960s and fought every top HW out there in the 70s.

And let's be honest now, while Holmes is a very good champ he wouldn't have come out of that HW era unscathed and undefeated if he started his career the same time as Foreman and fought the same opposition as he did. If Holmes wants to be bitter then maybe he should look at himself first instead of talking bad about other fighters like Foreman, ALi, Tyson, Holyfield, Marciano. For it was he that started his career at 24 and still fought bums until the age of 29 in the late 70s. Maybe that's why he's not so remembered.

I'd never realised they were so close in age. It's probably like you say because he fought nobodies for so long whilst Foreman was blowing people like Frazier, Norton and Lyle etc away and that era was truly great, whereas Holmes only started to fight the best out there when the cream had gone. I do think Foreman would have KO'd Holmes too, whether they fought in the 70's or the 90's.

No body knocks out a prime Holmes. Larry would have beaten George in the late 70's if George was fighting and the late 90's.

I found two links to it here, it took me a while to download it though. I thought Ali and Holmes both came out of the documentary looking like good people. Neither of them deserved to go through what they did.
The guy who said "because Ali's a Muslim he has a body of a 28 year old". I wanted to punch in the face the blood sucking leech! poor Ali had the body and reflexes of more like a 48 or 58 year old man by that point.

Larry Holmes has a right to bitch, he's the Rodney Dangerfield of Boxing..no respect I tell ya. They even had Cooney come into the ring second, like he was the fricken champ...my opinion:Holmes gives Foreman a boxing lesson. Just like Shavers.

Holmes should have retired after beating Mercer, he got real respect schooling the undefeated gold medalist.
