Kosovo was indeed just a province that was embroiled in the civil war/ethnic cleansing at the time.

The UK granted political asylum to 'kosovans' but accepted anyone who entered the country claiming to be from Kosovo. Numerous Romanians, Albanians and others entered the UK on false pretences at the tiem, apparently.

I understand that Kosova is now part of Albania (but I stand to be corrected if anyone knows better)

I sympathse with your friend as I too often will go on about my Balkans for days on end.
