The resident's self determination is something to be taken into account but so is a nation's desire to control islands off their coast. I'd say fighting a military conflict half way around the world to control a piece of land pretty well describes imperialism in most instances.
If you lived on the Falkland's I just think you would have a very different outlook, the people pure and simple want to remain British.
When we ruled the World and we did you included it was the British Empire,a by gone age which has gone, it's our History remember we were good at it.
So we are not going to hand over something which is our's, are you going to hand over Alaska because it has a border with Canada, think about it, by right's it belong's to Canada.!
