A couple of the other threads got me thinking about fights that had the promise of being great fights but were never made. My list of top dream fights that were never made, and what I believe the results would have been:
1) Riddick Bowe vs Lennox Lewis (1993-94): I go back and forth on this one, but I think at that point of their careers, Bowe wins by stoppage. There is always the chance that Lennox wins due to their past history, but at that point I just think Bowe was the better fighter with more options.
Ike Quartey vs. Tito Trinidad (1997-9: This would have been better than either guy's fight vs Oscar due to style match ups. Quartey was a beast n started very fast, while Tito liked to surge in the later rounds. Both guys would've been on the canvas n Ike's jab would've bothered Tito, but I think Trinidad would've come on strong late for the win. Would've been a great fight though.
Kostya Tszyu vs Floyd (2002-2004): Kostya would've given Floyd some trouble at this point due to his physical strength n aggressive style. He was a very hard hitter n would manhandle fast guys n be physical with them. Floyd wasn't at 140 yet, n would've given up some strength n size to Kostya, who also had underrated boxing skills from an outstanding amateur career. All that being said, Floyd is an ATG n would've boxed n win enough rounds to win a close, physically demanding decision.
4) James Toney vs Hop (2001-2002). Hop would be giving up a lot in terms of size, but I would've loved to see two old school, all around great, true pros fight it out. Toney wasn't very mobile at this point, n I think Hop would've hustled to a close, disputed decision in a great fight.
5). Roy Jones jr. vs Gerald Mclellan (1993-94): as most on here know, I hold it against Roy for not fighting many of his top challengers throughout his career. That being said, Roy had ATG ability n potential, n I think he beats everyone around his weight while he was fighting. G-Man had the speed n punch to make a knockout over anyone a realistic possibility, however. This would've been great n anything could've happened. G-Man could've caught Roy early n iced him, Roy could've caught him early n iced Gerald, Roy could've won a decision, or Gerald could've scored a desperation, come from behind knockout. The most likely scenario to me is that Roy survives some scary moments early and takes over late to win by stoppage or decision.
Interested to hear people's opinion on fights I missed, or where I was wrong in my dream fights. I'm sure many will disagree with my Hop vs Toney fight, but remember that Hop was still very active at that time n James was coming off the Jirov win n fighting better than ever.
