Interesting that you have two threads with a common theme.

Hooks are thrown uniformly, regardless of range. The elbow adjusts to direct the punch.
Uppercuts also rely on the angle at the elbow to deliver the fist upward.
You adjust the angle to suit the situation and therefore the elbow does not lock.
