Vargas was not answering back with anything. He was out of it and the ref saved him from a brutal knockout.
I disagree, knowing how Vargas fights. A standing count would have been more fair. Vargas was taking shots. But he wasn't going down.

If he did go down. Then that would be a fair decision from the ref.

What ever happened to the knockdown rules? nowadays just smother your opponent with good punches and you can win!

A new tactic is born.
It should have been a standing count but with being so early in the round the referee used his discretion and ended the fight.

There were no complaints from Vargas which is the most important thing.
A standing count is not permitted in the rules.

There is hardly a body in professional boxing that does have it in the rules (although some do). None of the WBA, WBO, IBF, or WBC have standing 8 counts. It's mostly an amateur thing.

Sometimes (panicking) refs incorrectly give a standing 8 count and that seems to confuse people.

Sometimes fans also think that when a fighter rises from being dropped and the ref continues to count to 8, that's a 'standing 8' count, but obviously it isn't.
