Maybe it would make sense to go full retro and recreate one of the earlier films and keep it set back in the time they were written. That if handled properly by the right director could be great.

Been thinking about this and agree - though at the same time it would be admitting "ermmm we've killed him off and no idea how to progress the character now - maybe we fucked up..."

Imagine 'Live and let die' with Idris Elba as Bond, a white Voodoo guy and a Tarantino like soundtrack.. Ha! 'Moonraker' with better fx, imagine 'Goldfinger' set in 1964 with The Kinks, The Stones, Etc and other songs from that year. It could work.

Or it could be a shiteshow like 'The Italian Job' remake.
