I though Sephiroth was way cooler.

I was never able to beat the game.  You see, I never used some of the characters and they were to weak do their jobs effectively when I finally got to the man in black.

you don't need to use them all, all you need is Cloud, Cid (or red 13), and Barrett. And does anybody really know what happened in the game? I've beaten it 2 times all the way thru and have seen every cutscene but i still am not entirely sure what went on.

Is Barrett the cat that rolled with the white blob?  I thought he was a worthless dummy and never played with him.

No barrett is the only black guy (ok so theres actually two in the ENTIRE game but im not completely sold on the second one actually being black) in the whole game. If thats not exact enough, He's the huge black guy with a gun grafted into his arm. And all you need to beat sephiroth (and just about everything else in the game) Is knights of the round. if you need alittle guide to get it i'll pm it to ya.
