It has been quite sometime now people here have not been able to understand why fights take place in Vegas over somewhere like Wembly.
Yes the amount of people that can actually attend the fight is much larger, Yes more money would be made on the gate alone but what many do not seem to understand is the money made on the gate would not be enough.
When a fight takes place in Vegas there is money made all around, for example.
Pacquiao/Hatton is coming up, In the UK at Wembly (Not sure exactly what it holds but we will say 80,000...ten thousand here or there will not make much of a dent in the grand scheme of things I promise you)
80,000 attending...The majority will be from the UK...More then likely 80% will be British....So now we have a gate of 80,000 people versus that of lets just say 5,000....But in Vegas all 5,000 seats can be jacked up to the point where they can charge twice for a bad seat on what Wembly can for a bad seat...so the 5,000 seats in Vegas will come to about what 20,000 in Wembly will....Yes we have a 60,000 difference but the gate is where the least of thiongs come into play
Second the Casinos are the biggest factor and to make the bigger difference Vegas in the betting capital of the world, also Vegas is packed with people 365 24/7 from all around the globe...many who want to see the fight as well so many people will pay to watch the fight via telecast at various casinos....
This money charged a % goes to the promoter again closing in on the gate differental.....
Now the biggie...Gambling...Very important....
People waiting to see the fight live of via telecast will gamble...Gambling creates big money...attracting bigger names to the Casinos....Casinos are greatful for this and they in the future will want bigger fights held there and those who don't already will bid on them in the future upping the amount those who already do hold bouts to keep doing so....Those in contract with promoters for X amount of bouts will pay more to reup their contract....
Casinos help pay for the publicity of fights...Taking more expenses off the promoter...who in turn makes more money who in turn can affoard bigger purses in the future...
Aside from that the fighters are able to recieve perks for themselves, they are able to make appearences that they are paid to do be it by casinos or various other businesses, putting more money in the fighters pockets...
When all is said and done a fight that could bring in lets say
3 million in gate recipts at a larger venue ends up generating an over all
100,000,000 million by time everything is all said and done in Vegas between all the aspects involved....
Plus guarenteed future earnings of that caliber, plus more money in gambling for the Casinos on those weekends...And no one be mistaken the extra money made by the Casinos trickles into the scheme of the people that made it happen...Not in a illegle sense (because I know someone here wil start saying something about bribes etc)...But in Marketing, public appearences, advertising, and so on......
In the end it boils down to Dollars and cents...Why is it Vegas took over NYC as the fight capital of the world?...Dollars and Cents!!!!
MSG is the Mecca of boxing and always will be but only in excitement wise not in the sense of generating money for all those involved....
I am not trying to sound as if I think all fights should be in Vegas etc but just before anyone post or complains about the fight not being somewhere no matter what the venue...Because the fighter is from there just remember the fighter also has to agree on the venue and they know where they will earn the biggest payday or where the future will help them earn a larger payday by fighter there.....
The gate is only a drop in the bucket of the whole scenario
