8 weeks of build up training is plenty of time. The body tends to plateau with conditioning, so it is important to not start too early, or late, and have the weight goal firm when doing so. Start too early and you missed your peak. Too late you never got there. As far as the mental prep, distractions and such, that is a whole other deal.
