I understand that Paul Williams recently beat the crap out of Winky Wright, and he only has one lost that he immediately avenged by effectively making Quintana sit down to pee, and then trading him for a pack of cigarettes.

I see that. I understand it.

And moreover, if you lump that together with a win over Margarito, and the fact that he's 6'1" with an insane 82" reach, it makes Williams a very interesting Welter, and just by virtue of his size, presumably unbeatable at that weight.

But what's missing from his resume` is a puncher, and someone who can match his height and reach. Because until he fights someone close to his size, can we really tell how good a boxer he is? My honest (albeit, maybe some what cynical) assessment is that Paul is somewhat of a "one-trick-pony" -- he uses his jab/reach to control the distance, and because his reach is so much greater than his opponents', it makes counter-punching a much more difficult thing (for Winky, an impossible thing, whose reach is 10in shorter). Which, by-the-way, is completely sound, correct boxing but Williams being strictly reliant upon reach just does not warrant his P4P ranking.

Sergio Gabriel Martinez has got to be one the most underrated, under-advertised fighters out there...I honestly can't think of a better example. I thought he CLEARLY beat Cintron, and his performance before that was a complete domination.

(...and my wife thinks he's handsome. Won't shut-up about it.)

Most importantly, SGM brings a 76in reach--the longest reach of any notable fighter Williams has faced.

Williams is a talented boxer only by virtue of his height and reach, much the same as the brothers K, Vitali and Vladimir. Being 6' 1" with an 82in reach is truly ridiculous for a Welter, but as you move up in weight those things diminish, for instance, I think the 6' 2" middleweight champion with a 75in reach would have been a much different fight than everyone is claiming it would have been, (and now will never be?)

I'm sorry to see the Pavlik fight go away because it would have either made Williams make an in-fight adjustment and propel himself to a deserved elite status, or confirmed for me everything I already think about Williams: he's decent boxer with freakishly long arms that is physically a bad draw for most Welterweights who are typically around 5' 9" with a 70-72in reach.

This fight with Sergio probably won't give us everything the Pavlik fight would have, but should be telling none-the-less. It should make Williams dip further into his boxing bag and show us what else he has to offer...but if there's not much else in the bag, Sergio will be the one taking on Pavlik in the next fight.
