He is an American, not an idiot.... I am sure he knows what dapper means.

I will avoid the obvious comment about those two things essentially meaning the same thing... ... but if he's a boxing fan that dapper may mean to look like Ian 'Dapper' Napa. Short, black and permanently wearing sunglasses.
