Audie Murphy- he could (and did) really do that sort of thing.
Edward Bunker (played Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs). Sent to San Quentin in 1952 at age 17, very rarely out of prison until 1975 when one of his books was made into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman. My uncle did time with him at Folsolm in the early 1970s. Also nominated for an Academy Award for a screenplay that he wrote.

This thread is far too butch for me, I might have to run away crying, trip over a pebble and call for help.

"Do you know what "nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an 'orrible cunt... me."

Film tough guys tend to be a bit stupid, so they don't impress me that much. Ooh you can clamp someone's head in a vice, big deal! I would be much more impressed if they were chanting Shakespearian couplets at the same time. General Zod is as good a tough guy as you can get for me. Not only was he articulate, but he wore camp clothing and had no sense of humour. My type of tough guy.
