Larry Holmes on Lennox Lewis' jab (Sept. 19, 2011)

Larry can be irritating at times. I mean Lewis didn't have a jab?? Give me a break! I DO believe Holmes had a better one than Lewis but Lennox still had an excellent jab, in fact it was his best weapon. I think I might actually go for Lennox to beat Holmes too, I mean we all talk about Lewis' defeats but don't forget Holmes in his prime was given a very hard fight against Witherspoon, now I personally think Lewis would have made short work of Witherspoon. I may be wrong but I think it would have been a Bonecrusher moment.

Of course this doesn't tell us much, it's the old horses for courses factor and how well two guys do against a common opponent can be very misleading. I just feel Lewis had more in his arsenal than Holmes.

Another irritating point about Holmes is he refuses to accept he may not have been the greatest boxer ever and if you use logic when he is questioned he rubbishes it. I once saw an interview where he was asked how he would have gone on against Ali a few years earlier and he just says he would have done the same and Holmes made Ali look shot. But then later on in the same interview he was asked how he feels he would have fared against Tyson when he was younger and he says he was on the slide and it would have never happened like that in his prime (something I actually agree with). The thing is Holmes against Tyson was around the same age as Ali when he face Holmes yet he is allowed to be on the slide and Ali (though he clearly was) was not.

i agree alot with this. but its true Larry was 2 years out of training when he fought Tyson. Its his fault though not to get in tip top shape. You cant take a fight and then say you werent in shape. I still think a 1984 Holmes beats Tyson.

I also think Holmes pulls out a win over Lewis, but there will be no KO. YOU JUST CAN'T KO LARRY HOLMES. EARNIE SHAVERS KNOWS ABOUT THAT ONE.

Holmes had the best jab only Ali and Louis come close. Lewis was certainly good with it but not as good as Holmes. Larry was the better and greater fighter. If they fought Holmes would feel the Lewis jab for sure as he knew how to use his height and reach.

Far and away the best jabber Lewis ever fought was Ray Mercer, who gave him a VERY close fight working mostly behind his jab, although having a much shorter reach. A while later the CORPSE of Larry Holmes was able to beat the same Mercer quite handily working behind his own jab. I think it's really quite unlikely Lewis wouldn't get his ass owned by a peak Holmes, who nearly matched his size and clearly did have a better jab. Holmes had big trouble with some guys he was better than as did Lewis, but Holmes(despite getting hit more often and with better shots) always got up. I think Lewis actually get's a bit of a pass for his losses due to the nature of them. People assume oh he got caught it happens.. Who's to say that he wouldn't have taken a further beating against McCall and Rahman had he had Holmes recouperative powers and fought on I know Lewis didn't have a bad chin, but aside from Shannon Briggs he never beat anyone who was able to dent it. Lewis never clearly beat a good fighter who had a jab that gave him problems either. Even Evander had a lot of success working his way inside with it in their rematch.

I forgot the fight with Bruno. He gave him a lot of trouble with his jab early on and LEwis beat him, but that only makes me more confident Holmes would've owned him although Lewis became much better than that.

I like Holmes well enough and he was a hell of a fighter, but he had about as much charisma as a potato, and I can't ever remember getting excited about watching a Larry Holmes fight. I believe Ali in his prime would have schooled Holmes, and Tyson would have knocked Holmes out even in his prime. As for Lewis vs prime Holmes, i'd give the nod to Lewis.

Larry Holmes had a torn bicep, and beat Ken Norton more convincingly than Muhammad Ali ever did. He was hit by possibly the hardest hitting Heavyweight of all time, right on the button and he was up within 4 seconds. Shook it off and then handed Earnie Shaver's his ass.

Larry Holmes would outpoint Lennox Lewis quite clearly.

Reading that actually made me cringe... He was LUCKY to get off the deck after being hit with that punch? How in the hell does one even think to write shit like that. He was hit with a wrecking ball by one of the best HW punchers of all time. In any other instance where a man takes that kind of trauma to the head, if he's walking upright within hours, hell within days, you'd think holy christ that guy is tough as nails. MEanwhile Holmes gets up in SEVEN SECONDS, goes on to defend himself from further bombs, survives the round and wins the next one and the fight. Where does good fortune come into play exactly Einstein?
