Was it OK for Cotto to "quit" in Cotto vs Margarito I?

I never thought Miguel Cotto quit that fight.

Maybe the Puerto Rican caved in to the physical limitations that he had, but it was quite understandable, for if in fact the suspected loaded gloves, the glove of choice for Tony Margarito was illegal... then Miguel indeed was, a victim of an inhuman battering!

The repulsive thing, given that, if there actually was premeditation, was the manner by which the camp who administered the brutality was celebrating! Unconscionable!

A fighter should always have the right to quit when taking a beating like that. I'd rather see someone try and have to quit than someone who runs away for the whole fight or holds and spoils the entire time.

Cotto did the right thing, he was spitting blood, sweating blood and pretty much oozing blood left right and centre. It wasn't as if he took a couple of punches and quit. He took some serious licks. Margarito made him fight at a faster pace then he is used to and bust him up as he slowed down, he was pretty spent.

Of course it was okay for him to say 'enough is enough'. It was hardly Duran/Leonard 2.

When a guy's face is a black and red mark and that he really doesn't feel well, I think it's safe to say that he did the correct thing to quit. There is a life after boxing, and generally, there is more time after than during the boxing period. I think that it's not unfair to ask for some quality time after with something else than parkinson or pugilistic demencia. Cotto couldn't win to that point but could receive more damage, the risk doesn't worth the end bell.

Cotto has that mentality that he doesn't want to risk his life in the ring and would rather fold than continue to take a beating. He said as much when he had the face to face with Margarito. He said "this is my job, I have kids, I'm not gonna waste my time taking a beating and not be able to go see them" something to that extent, and he basically thought Margarito was crazy that he would rather die in the ring than quit.


I commend Cotto for putting his life ahead of the sport, but I'm not sure he wanted to reveal something like that in front of the man he's about to rematch. If your opponent knows you'd rather quit then fight if you're getting hurt too badly it is gonna put them at the mental advantage cause they know they can make you quit, and when you openly admit it to them it can make things worse. So I commend Cotto, but I don't think "this is just my job, what kind of idiot would continue to fight on" is the kind of message you wanna send to a guy that's already done it to you once.

I don't think he quit in the sense that Ortiz did against Maidana. I just think he physically had nothing left in him to stand up and take them shots anymore and his corner did right by throwing in the towel, cotto had nothing left to give.

You do what you have to do to survive and fight another day. Never did understand this belief that boxers should never quit when they are taking a beating.
